Obesity spreads among affluent
Lifestyles blamed for wider waists
David Wahlberg - Staff
Tuesday, May 3, 2005

Obesity, long considered a problem mostly of the poor, is rising fastest among Americans who make more than $60,000 a year, a new study indicates.

Health officials blame the expanding size of the affluent on lifestyle.

"They're moving to the suburbs, commuting longer and often working longer hours," said Dr. Jennifer Robinson, an epidemiologist at the University of Iowa. "They're eating at restaurants more, getting carryout and sipping lattes. It doesn't take many extra calories to add up."

Obesity among low-income Americans has often been tied to the low cost of fast food and to lack of access in many neighborhoods to fresh produce and safe places to exercise. But Robinson said it appears that the availability of high-end grocery stores, parks and gyms in wealthier areas isn't keeping obesity at bay.

"We wonder what the long-term health consequences will be," she said.

6. Remember that recent report
that said the obesity claims were largely hype? And that the links between obesity and diseases were over-stated? Yep. That study was paid for by the fast-food industry. Not that the MSM included that in their "reporting".
Same as ole Bob Dole stubbornly denying to Katie Couric that there really is a link between tobacco and cancer.
We've got a country full of corrupt money-grubbing crooks. And it's killing us. Literally.
