Why The Hunt For Bin Laden Has Failed
3 May 2005

NPR's Morning Edition concluded its two part interview with Gary Schroen, who was given the assignment to go after Osama Bin Laden and "Bring his head back in a box" after 9/11. There were two key points, neither of which came as a surprise:

* We failed to capture Bin Laden largely due to diverting resources initially committed to capturing Bin Laden for use in Iraq, leaving insufficient resources for going after Bin Laden.

* We should not feel reassured because there has not been another attack. Bush administration actions against al Qaeda have been ineffective at reducing the threat, and they are still out there plotting against us.

Morning Edition also had another interesting story today on Intelligence Gathering, New York-style.New York City is taking intelligence gathering into its own hands to compensate for not receiving sufficient information from the federal government's intelligence gathering organizations

1. Stories like this won't be on NPR much longer
since they've been taken over by the reich wing.

2. NPR appears more independent than PBS
NPR has more money from private donations, including a lot of money from Joan Kroc. That might help them remain more independent.

3. no, no surprize--but very glad they keep this important issue on the table

4. many think we are safe BECAUSE of Bush policies-but it is exact

opposite--we are NOT safe Because of Bush policies.
Sigh ............

5. Bush most likley has made things worse
They might be somewhat more decentralized following the attack on Afghanistan, but there are a lot more operatives due to increased recruiting following the invasion of Iraq.

Plus they think over a much longer time scale than Americans tend to.

6. * Needs Bin Laden, like Reagan needed the Red Menace
We'll never find Bin laden because our excuse for imperialism would expire. The freepers need abortion and terra and bigotry to sell their wars.

I'd be willing to be we know exactly where he is. After all: We flew his family to safety on 9/12.
