HALLIBURTON owns shares of XM. By paying XM you are supporting global lust and greed. The positioning is quite ironic, and hypocritical - just goes to show that these days, liberals have no teeth (at least the ones in a position to do something!)

1. Oh, Crud
My husband has XM in his Acura.
It is the only way we can get Air America (except streaming through Internet, but I like to listen to radio in my car). We love XM, I didn't know it was owned by one of the evil cabal.

3. I understand....
I don't blame the people who have XM. I know sometimes there is no other choice, and I don't see anything wrong. But if you have have choices then you could choose not to have XM.

4. They own a fairly significant amount of shares.
Don't let people fool you. They will say it is only '2%' or '.5' or whatever. The key is that, in a big public company, they own a significant amount of shares relative to other individual/single-corporate owners (as opposed to pension fund investors). This type of investor tends to have a disproportionate amount of influence as to board elections and the like.

I'm sticking with Sirius.

7. This may be the case, but XM has no say over the content on AAR
They just have an exclusivity deal to carry it. I have no probelm with Halliburton suffering the indignity of something it partially owns lampooning them every single day.

I own more stock in XM (and Sirius for those who would claim this makes me somehow biased) than the bottom institutional holders you have listed. Amazing job putting that list together.

It's amazing how this crap continues to be thrown out there without simply hitting yahoo to see if it is true.

15. What is known thus far -as far as those that bother to listen have learned
on MAY 1st, XM rebrands 'America Left' as 'Air America'

- still have Schultz and Colmes (wait.. read more)
- still last 2 hours of Randi
- get Mike Malloy on a three hour tape delay
- NOTE: they are already carrying Rachel's new show

on (or before) JULY 16th

- Schultz and Colmes go 'somehere' (either an existing channel or a second 'left' channel)
- 100% Air America Radio, in realtime, no subs

16. Where have you seen this?
Edited on Mon Apr-25-05 09:21 PM by Caution
From the research i have done (minimal) Halliburton is most definitely not listed as a major share holder (which puts them under 1.9% of shareholders and thus outside of any board influence (contrary to the below poster, the amount of shares owned is so minimal that this would certainly not effect board level decisions).

Halliiburton is most certainly not listed as an insider or a form 144 holder, not does Yahoo list them as a major institutional holder.

Having hit each of the major institutional holders (not lincluding the mutual funds holders, didn tfeel like spending all that much time on this) at OpenSecrets neither of these companies (Edit: Sirius and XM) show major investors giving any bias towards either party. The same holds true for the insider lists for the most part.

While Halliburton may own some shares in XM this isn't very uncommon for even some of your favorite true-blue companies as a result of just normal institutional holdings for a major internation corporation like Halliburton.

FYI you can find much of this info out at Yahoo
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/mh?s=XMSR

add up the percentages owned by the various groups listed and it's over 80% of the stock in the company. This does not include the stock held in reserve by the company itself.

Anyone who actually knows anything about the manner in which corporate boards work will back me up in saying that Halliburton will have zero say in the way this company runs.

By paying XM I am supporting a company which provides me with good service, provides a liberal voice over their network to 3 million listeners, provides a voice to Bob Edwards (who just this morning mentioned every single one of the hot topics that are running around DU right now, unheard of for the normal media, a company which provides me with an opportunity to listen to baseball games from across the country and finally provides me with a daily dose of Lewis Black on the comedy channel. To say that somehow XM is benefitting Halliburton and their corporate greed in any meaningful way is just silly.

Gauche of me to say so my first post here, but if you're listening to internet radio you might just groove on TREASON which web-casts every Saturday night at 7 pm MST (9 Eastern) from

http://radio.uccs.edu

Talk radio so progressive, it might be moving into the infrared end of the spectrum. Or the ultraviolet.

NOBODY owns us. Which is why we have such hilarious technical difficulties at times, our station is, in fact, an old ATM booth.

If you like, you can email [email protected] and ask to be added to our update list. You'll get an email once a week saying (with varying degrees of accuracy) what we'll be talking about.

38. I don't hate XM for this, I hate AAR
Edited on Tue Apr-26-05 08:13 PM by drbtg1
It was AAR that distributed through both XM and Sirius.

It was AAR that knew Sirius did an "Unfiltered" broadcast of AAR's lineup, not XM.

It was AAR, through their high profile personality Randi Rhodes, that TOLD listeners to get Sirius instead of XM.

It was AAR, not Sirius, that decided to take a deal to reduce the size of their potential audience (defying logic) and screwing the Sirius audience.

It was AAR, through their direct actions, that reduced the value of Sirius services after being proactive to promote Sirius.

I smell class action lawsuit. A justifiable one, at that.

They would love to see AAR off Sirius. Regardless of what people say, AAR is still 100% 24/7 on Sirius. Let's wait and see what actually happens in July. This is not to say you should not email Sirius and let them know you want them to pay for AAR.

The problem I see with DU on this topic is that the obvious XM supporters have poisoned the air here. It seems Sirius supporters put their money where their beliefs are and would like a little more consideration for being screwed. Especially here, of all places.

Regardless of your blanket condemnation as "righ wing radicals", I found a bit more support for the "AAR with Sirius" position over there, hence my recommendation.
