31. What about non-Christians........
do they believe in heaven and hell? How about those who say they are "spiritual", not "religious."? How about Christians who don't take the Bible literally, what would be their answers? Anyone??????????

7. No. This is heaven and this is hell.
The Harder They Come by Jimmy Cliff

Well they tell me of a pie up in the sky
Waiting for me when I die
But between the day you're born and when you die
They never seem to hear even your cry

CHORUS:
So as sure as the sun will shine
I'm gonna get my share now of what's mine
And then the harder they come the harder they'll fall, one and all
Ooh the harder they come the harder they'll fall, one and all

Well the officers are trying to keep me down
Trying to drive me underground
And they think that they have got the battle won
I say forgive them Lord, they know not what they've done

CHORUS

ooh yeah oh yeah woh yeah ooooh

And I keep on fighting for the things I want
Though I know that when you're dead you can't
But I'd rather be a free man in my grave
Than living as a puppet or a slave

CHORUS

Yeah, the harder they come, the harder they'll fall one and all
What I say now, what I say now, awww
What I say now, what I say one time
The harder they come the harder they'll fall one and all
Ooh the harder they come the harder they'll fall one and all

I want to go to the other place.

Any place that accepts Fred Phelps, Pat Robertson and Bush can not be defined as Heaven.

9. Immortality is a curse incompatible with the human condition
Edited on Thu Apr-21-05 05:52 PM by wuushew
We as humans neither have the ability to experience infinite time nor the ability to hold those memories. Memory and cognition are the mechanisms by which we experience reality. Given infinite time an individual whould experience the outcomes of all possible events in the universe.

We either have to remember those events or loose them via forgetting. Either way the outcome results in the death of the individual via changes to the basic mental processes we term "human".

This is why even if an afterlife is true it becomes meaningless and irrelevant. Drink and be merry for tommorrow we die.

10. NO.
But they do seem content to waste away this known life in hopes of a better one after death.

Me, I'm gonna live this one up as best I can. At least I'll die KNOWING what I did, and did the best I could in this life, the one I'm sure exists. I like to play by house rules with home court advantage. Call me crazy.

14. According to the book "If Grace is True"
We're all going to heaven. I rather recommend the book (authors Gulley and Mulholland), and am looking forward to reading their follow-up book "If God is Love." Both books offer a very different take on scripture than the fundamentalists, and cite many biblical passages for an understanding of God that isn't all vengeance and negative judgment. Quite enjoyable.

22. This world "IS" a hell
Heaven is a marketing construct, when all desire is satiated, and
beyond desire lies a place of pure fulfillment. Rather this world
is a place of hungry spirits greedy with desire, expecting that
fulfillment will lead to anything but more desire and such is the
wheel of birth and death.

23. We're all going to Hell.
There are so few humans who can meet the high standards to enter Heaven that it makes it impossible except for a few. Sounds like a Country Club doesn't it?

On the other hand, in Hell, all our friends and relatives will be there, as well as our enemies. Sounds just like the Earthly plane doesn't it? Nothing changes I'll bet, except maybe some table turning.

The first time we came into this world, we were all innocent babies born into circumstances we had no control over and having to learn the hard way through experience. When we go to Hell, we will have all that knowledge behind us and we will probably have some fun getting even with our enemies, and others will have fun getting even with us.

So, I write fantasy. One of my exercises is to write scenarios of what a possible afterlife could be like, depending on your religion.

26. Who cares?
I'm living now, with no promise of heaven or threat of hell.

My decisions and actions are entirely my own, and I enjoy the benefits or suffer the consequences of them.

I don't even care enough about religion to be an atheist.

I guess you could say I'm an apathist.

Now, back to living.

Oblivion.

I can deal with that.

I might be willing to change from atheism when just one dead believer comes back to complain that he or she got swindled. Or to tell me about Heaven, complete with photos. Preferably digital.

(NOTE: no, NDE's don't count. We can reproduce those on a centrifuge.)
