Homer Simpson: show is LW or RW?
tho it seems to be LW in general, i have noticed times that the comments are RW. Plus, it is on Fox.

What do you think? Which is it really?

1. Equal opportunity offenders, IMO
Edited on Sun Apr-17-05 09:03 PM by jandrok
I've seen them skewer folks on both sides of the aisle. I think they're more anarchist in overall outlook.

South Park covers a lot of the same territory, but in cruder fashion.

Homer when he got glaucoma.

11. Lol.. that was the best episode ever...
Lisa: "It smells like the art teachers office in here"
Bart: "Smells like Otto's jacket in here"

While they may skewer the radical left sometimes Simpsons is purely a LW show.

3. Groening will bash anyone he feels is screwing up. It doesn't matter if
they are Republican or Democrat. He does not play favorites and that one of the things I love about the show.

7. "Life in Hell"
It's better than "The Simpsons" but I'm not certain Groening still does the strip.

It's so fucking funny that the Simpsons "get it" but so many many real people don't.

8. It rips on Fox the whole time. It's very brave.
After all, it's the show that made the channel a success.

In one episode, Homer is a Republican and Marge is a Democrat (When Burns is standing for Congress). That's as close to an agenda it gets. Groening is LW, but he wouldn't let that distort a brilliant show.

13. I love it
I love it. The show is great. I agree with fox. I've seen a few where they nail fox in the episode. I'm surprised they haven't gotten rid, but then like Taxloss said it helps bring them in raitings along with "American Idol." So they'd never get rid of it.

9. I recently saw a rerun of an ep that first aired last fall. The media
were all congregating to cover a big story, and the Fox van cruised by verrrrrrrry slowly, adorned with a huge BUSH/CHENEY sign, blasting the song "We Are the Champions."

They make fun of everyone, but they do seem to have a liberal slant most of the time. ;)

so it certainly tilts far more left than right. It points out that the right isn't the sole producer of bullshit, but certainly the major supplier.

16. It definetely leans to the left
I remember hearing how during the '00 election, they had a remark at the begining of the show (when Bart always writes on the chalckboard) regarding who they supported. Later, Groening or someone else on the show said they were surprised anyone could have even voted for Bush.

The show is brilliant and a classic at this point. It's brilliant social satire and they've made fun of Clinton and Dems as well. It has not been as funny in recent seasons, but still beats over half the crap on TV.

Also remember, GHW Bush once commented that the American people should behave "more like the Waltons and less like the Simpsons", a remark which I doubt the writers ever really forgot.

19. Dust mites: Neo-con tool or left leaning allies?
Please stop dividing everything into left, right or red, blue.

In the first place, Homer is a comic foil. As resident lovable fool, not a role model.

Secondly, "The Simpsons" has long been a cash-generating thorn in Fox's side. The network has no creative input in the show and they positively hate that.

Everytime we embrace or reject something and label it Democratic, Republican, Progressive, or Conservative, we draw a little box around it. It divides us further and limits our ability to get a message out.

In recent weeks, we've seen Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, and Jesse Jackson all attacked because they dared to step outside the box we created for them.

Some people and things belong in their box: Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity. They lack broadness of thinking and created their box themselves.

But if Jon Stewart, for example, says something you disagree with it doesn't mean he's "crossed over" or joined the dark side. It just means you disagree with what he said.

We consume too much energy drawing borderlines around everything. We have left and right food, clothing, cars, hairstyles, music, and now toilet tissue. Where will it end? Will we be purging our lives of those neo-con dust mites?

This desire to label everything is evidence of a narrow mind. It's a mental short cut to avoid thinking. It's a practice we shouldn't indulge in too much.

22. Ever see the episode where Krusty runs for congress as a repub?
They do a parody of Fox News and it's absolutely hilarious.

Actually, I think the Simpson's attitude to politics is summed up nicely in one episode featuring conventions of both parties: the Dems have a huge banner reading "we're unfit to govern", the Repubs have one reading "we're just plain evil!". They rip on everyone, as any good satirist should- but I think they lean a little to the left.

I loved the FOX ticker at the bottom:

Classic stuff. I think that's also one of the episodes featuring "Republican HQ" with Mr Burns, Bob Dole and Dracula discussing strategies and performing occult rituals in a gothic castle. As the saying goes, it's funny because it's true...

About where John Stewart and the daily show lie.

And I think the middle of the road certainly lies quite a bit to the left of where our government is now.

Obviously, they go after both sides, but after watching nearly every episode, I think they tend to bash the right with a harsher edge.

38. the creator is left wing, however, he wants to make all laugh
I think some of the RW leaning comments are thrown in to make the real-life Homer Simpsons feel a bit more home and learn to laugh at themselves.

The conservation movement is a breeding ground of communists
and other subversives. We intend to clean them out,
even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.

There is also a pretty funny quote from Flanders when he says something like "I haven't been this happy since we stole the 2000 election."

Very good and underrated social and political satire from this show...
