Do you remember when religious leaders were derided?
Jimmy Carter comes to mind.

He was ridiculed widely for his strong beliefs, and comments about "lusting" in his heart.

My, how things have changed.

1. Carter is still derided-by freepers
and the so-called "religious right" who say all sorts of horrible things about him, that he lobbied to get the Nobel Peace Prize, isn't a real Christian because he doesn't agree with their agenda--to my mind, they are showing that religious faith has nothing to do with what they are doing.

3. Clinton also wore his faith on his sleeve
and was a regular churchgoer, something nobody in this gang even pretends to be. Look how they treated him.

4. Nope.
But I'm young and from Kooky Konservative Land.

I got a chance to see some of Bishop Gene Robinson's remarks at the Planned Parenthood Prayer Breakfast last night on C-SPAN. Amazing. He encouraged liberal people to take back the Bible. Very powerful speaker. Our movement needs more clergymen like him (and there are, believe it or not).

5. That's because Carter was truly religious.
As such, he was humble in his faith and recognized his weaknesses. The bible thumpers have no use for that sort of faith, even from one of their own. To them, religion is a weapon they use to beat their opponents into submission.

By the same token, JFK won his presidency despite his faith, not because of it. If he had worn his Catholicism on his sleeve like dumbya wears his Protestantism on his, he wouldn't have gotten beyond his Senate seat.
