MSNBC's Nachman has cancer
NEW YORK (AP) -- MSNBC talk show host Jerry Nachman has been diagnosed with cancer after having his gallbladder removed.

Nachman, who's also MSNBC's vice president and editor-in-chief, told viewers Tuesday that he'll be gone several weeks while he undergoes treatment. The cable channel wouldn't divulge his age or provide further details Wednesday, other than to say he has a "gallbladder malignancy." "I told you last month that I'd had my gallbladder plucked out. Well, as my mother would have said in a frightened whisper, they found something. So, in the technical language of surgery, they're going back in," Nachman said during his late-afternoon show.

Doctors have told him they're pleased with test results, "but this will require some down time." "So don't go too far. I'll see you pretty soon," he said. "I hope President Bush waits 'til I'm back to invade anyplace he might decide to invade. If not, take good notes and let me know what I missed."

MSNBC hired Nachman, a longtime TV and radio journalist and former New York Post editor, as its No. 2 executive in April to help compete with Fox News Channel and CNN, which have dominated the channel in the ratings.
