Bob Dole on Fresh Air

try to catch it in your market or listen online.

He comes off as a cranky, doddering, drunk-sounding, meandering old fool.

Whenever Terry Gross asks him about anything he gets all wound up and says "I wanna talk about my book"

Worth it.

6. Yeah, it's that arm and that pencil
I knew a number of WWII vets who were wounded, who were permanently disabled. They were my father's friends. They sure as hell didn't go around bleating about it and capitalizing on it. They lived their lives.

Dole's always been a prick - everyone in the Senate knew what a prick he was, and the cleaning up of him in order to make him palatable as a Presidential candidate (remember how the networks and cable news showed opted not to show him falling off a stage during the campaign?) lasted about as long as his viability did.

Viagra has done nothing to improve his mien. Neither did that really bad facelift, and the dyed hair is just annoying.

His second wife, by the way, is just as bad as he is.

8. That's what you get for wasting several years of college posing as
a med student - when your grades are horrendous. Meanwhile, all the "less patriotic" are getting shot at by Nazis and the Japanese.

Of course, once he flunked out, he spent what, two months in Italy before getting his ass literally shot off? I'd hate to see what happened to the men who served (briefly) under him . . .

10. What?
Edited on Tue Apr-12-05 12:26 PM by OldLeftieLawyer
What's this "med student" business?

I never knew his background - I just assumed he had been drafted and went to war like all the other boys and men of that time.

OK, here's a link to it all, and thanks for turning on the light for me: http://www.tedellis.net/dole-article.htm

Prick liar of the highest order. And they tried to paint him as the "war hero" running against the "draft dodger."

These scum get worse and worse, don't they?

13. Senator for Sale
was where I read about his "time in college". My memory may be wrong, but I believe that he was going as a med student (or pre-med) so that he could ride out the war. But his grades were nowhere near the minimum necessary.

So, when it appeared that he was going to get tossed out of college, he went in voluntarily (as a last resort OF CHOICE).

9. he was an asshole from day one
My grandmother knew this, and him from WAY back. Has nothing to do with his clumsiness, disabilities, Viagra dosage, Liddy or years of being one of the most corrupt and powerful sacks of shit we have ever seen.

4. I won't be watching the Jon Stewart tonight
He's having quite a few dreary guests here of late, and it makes his show pretty blah. He's usually good, but he needs someone with a little vim and vigor as a guest. :boring: :boring: :boring:

5. At Least Watch the Non-Interview Material
That's usually stellar even if the guest sucks.

7. That's what I watch, because, lately,
I don't understand the suckass quality of the guests.

And, as much as I hate to say this, Lewis Black blew chunks the other night.

Stewart, though, and his opening set, are always brilliant. Last night, the coverage of the Royal wedding was headlined as "Bride Of Chucky." That's pure genius.

14. You're right about that
Sometimes when I'm dreading his guest, the rest of the show is very good, so yes, I guess I'll watch it tonight as always. Thanks for the reminder Gio.

3. Sounds like the Poppy Bush, Dan Rather interview decades ago.
Edited on Tue Apr-12-05 12:02 PM by Cleita
Rather pressured him on his knowledge of Iran-Contra. Poppy huffily informed him that this was not supposed to be what he was to be interviewed about and then he stomped off the set on live TV. I wonder if Dan's fall from grace at the hands of Dimson wasn't Poppy's chance to finally get even.

11. I doubt it
theyve feuded and insulted Rather for years. Rather's destruction was more of an attack on our nation's populace and frail hopes for an informed democracy and free press than it was a personal grudge.
If Rather is ranching partners with Rumsfeld, then what can you really
draw from that?

12. You're probably right about that.
Since I am old enough to have seen that interview live, I have always wondered. Also, Rather has never had an interview, in my memory, with Poppy since then although he has interviewed Dimson.
