Calif. reconsiders Ahnuld.
"Like millions of California Democrats, Wendy Bokota voted for Arnold Schwarzenegger, even though he is a Republican. "I thought he could make a difference," she says. But her flirtation was short-lived: when Schwarzenegger proposed limiting school spending to help balance the budget, Bokota, a mother of three, became incensed. When the governor appeared recently in Anaheim, not far from her home, she and her children joined the throng of protesters who seem to dog Arnold everywhere he goes these days. "I guess I wasn't as informed as I should have been when I voted for him," she now says."

Gee, Y'think Wendy?

Idiot.

I love that Ahnuld is dogged by protesters now where ever he goes. CA nurses lead the way!

30. Very nice indeed
If I was in Arnold's place I wouldn't fuck with people either if he wants to stay governor. I'm still surprised he won that election anyways. People were fooled I think but like Howard Dean said when he became DNC chairman: why would you trust republicans with your money?

35. A friend of mine actually voted for the SOB
I couldn't believe it. He dutifully spouted every bloody GOP talking point. I'd counter with a fact, but he just didn't want to hear it. I guess he (and millions of other Californians) just bought into the hype. The good thing is that Schwarzeneger's bipartisan clout seems to have finally vanished. My guess is he won't be able to rebuild it. A couple more months of this and the Dem candidate for Governor should be able to pull out a win.

In the meantime, I've got to ask my buddy what he thinks of Ahnuld now. :)

He's made things worse.

Lots of people were dazzled by his star power and charisma. :puke:

He's as much of a corporate appeaser as Bush. He may be liberal on social issues, but so are most Dems.

6. Millions?
According to the exit polls, 18% of Arnold's 4,203,596 votes were from Democrats. That works out to about 750,000, not "millions" as MSNBC claims. Something tells me that if this was an anti-war protest, MSNBC would screw up the other way in their crowd estimate.

8. You know. My liberal heart is not bleeding for these
supporters of Ahnold. We tried to tell them what was going on and they wouldn't listen. So there is an old saying that goes, "when you make your bed you have to lie it in, so you'd better make it the right way or suffer the discomfort". These Arnold supporters are going to have to live with what they did until we, the clean-up crew, will be able to come around again and remake the bed.

14. Why didn't you see him as bad?
There were those of us who googled and searched for everything we could come up with about his past. We posted everything we could find over and over again here at DU. I know you were a member then. Besides the sleazy and unsavory, there was the profile of a man who wheels and makes deals to get what he wants. He doesn't worry about the niceties of conventions or legalities if he can get his lawyers to cover up.

What didn't you see???

We need to know so we can fix this and get people like you to pay attention.

I thought he was just a beign boob and I would save my hate and venting my spleen for chimp. GEESH for God's sake don't think I don't know what an ass he is! Sometimes hate can wear you out and I try and hold back on it but Arnie has earned it.

19. So hate is the same as bad?
Maybe that's what happened. I don't hate him. I hate what he stands for and what he has done to get where he is. I don't like him personally, but I don't hate him. The point of my post is why didn't others see what many of us did? What kind of fairy dust did he sprinkle on people like Wendy that clouded their judgement. The facts were out there even to hate, but I guess it wasn't good enough.

but, however, not good for anyone. if one recall campaign can be turned into a media circus won by someone who wouldn't make it past a regular primary in his own party, it could happen again.

21. I wonder if we could circulate a petition to reinstate
Governor Davis to finish his term. I mean this was a bad dancer cutting in on a guy's wife and then refusing to give her back. It might be easier to do than an out and out recall. Didn't Davis win the majority of votes in the recall, but had to acquiesce to Ahnold because of the stupid rules?

Any ideas Californians?

22. There's a lesson here for other races and other states
Not just starstruck, a lot of Gov. Jock's supporters voted for CHANGE for CHANGE'S SAKE. Didn't matter what it was. They wanted change. Didn't matter what he stood for, or whether his policies would be effective. They felt it "couldn't be worse." Gray Davis was the figurehead. The people who voted in Total Recall don't understand the legislative process. They voted for term limits too. Did anyone ever ask if maybe term limits were the problem? No. CHANGE, DAMMIT. Something new and bright and shiny and ---

Thing is, the problem they were mad about was gridlock in the Legislature. Since when is the solution to gridlock in the Legislature recalling the Governor? (Oh yeah, term limits were supposed to fix that). Didn't make any sense and it didn't MATTER that it made no sense.

They wanted change and voted in the Terminator and then complain when he's a big dumb bully?

And CA still has gridlock in the Legislature.

Go figger.

I can't believe the sound that comes out of his blockhead, every time Ahnalt opens his mouth. THIS is the guvunuh of Kalifournyea?

25. Right. The muscleman connection. Let's get a bully to pound those elites
in the Capitol.

Do you think there's any hope in educating people about actual issues and the legislative process?

In the early nineties, the No Brainer solution was getting rid of "career politicians" via Term Limits and bringing in the CEO business types to run California like a business. And they did run it, RIGHT INTO THE GROUND. Did anyone take a look at the effects of the earlier decision and say maybe THAT is the problem?

Maybe people understand that politics is about personality. Hiring a Cult of Personality figure with no legislative (or any!!) qualifications for the job doesn't bother them. They see politicians in the cardboard cutout way they've been groomed to see them.... Kick their ass, Arnie! YYYYeeeeeeaaaaahhhhhhhh.

People love their figureheads. Wonks aren't sexy. Bring in the clowns.

(Do voters care that they voted for Arnie and got Pete Wilson again?)

nope, not California. Of course anyone who looks at the ludicrous results posted from that absurd faux recall situation shouldnt find it hard to believe it was rigged, very obviously.

and when you compare and contrast the results for prop 54, you KNOW for a fact its a bogus deal.

The recall was a circus situation and PLENTY of us out here fought it like crazy, and have continued the fight. We came in bright blue for Kerry/Edwards with NO campaign support, contributed millions and sent our people out of state to work, on our own dime, all to fight the Chimp. We're also the home of Barbara Boxer, so STEP OFF.

37. last latent conservatism

Arnie had two selling points in '03. One was being "a different kind of Republican"- Not Gray Davis, the pre-1992 sort of semiconservative Democrat. The other was that he could "fix" the budget problem easily.

Well, the budget fix was about begging Dubya for dough. When he got zilch, he did what Davis had planned out. So much for that selling point.

Now California voters are figuring out that "a different kind of Republican" means: just another Republican. People were pretty confused and fooled by Maria Shriver and his personal behavior, and now they've figured out that these don't matter. Goodbye to that selling point.

The good news is, all the benefit of the doubt given Republicans is now gone in California.

The whole game fits the national pattern of pre-1992ish Democrat -> Republican -> Modern Democrat....

I'd say the state is now ready to go on to that last step, to become truly Democratic, and the election that marks the beginning of that is Barbara Boxer's reelection this November.
