Kerry Pledges $1M to DCCC
By Chris Cillizza
Roll Call Staff
April 5, 2005

"Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) last week donated $500,000 in leftover presidential primary funds to his party’s House campaign arm and pledged to raise another $500,000 for House candidates, the latest sign that he continues to nurse an active interest in a 2008 race."

Bit of editorializing at the end there. Could also mean that he's doing what he said he would with his leftovers.

I dunno, I don't understand campaign finance. But I thought it was worth noting anyway for those who wondered what he was doing with the money. He seems to be slowly doling it out. Some to the DNC, assuming that was from the same pot, and now some to the DCCC.

Anyway...

1. That's Great, I Hope He Keeps It Coming
The more of his leftover funds that he donates, the more I like him again.

2. The media always puts the worst spin they can on any Democrat.
The fact that it was roll call doing it just means that the RNC gave them their spin to spread the word to GOP spokespeople.

3. Giving some cash to his party and his energy to the --
-- spirit of elections well above and beyond the corresponding investments of his opponent, Senator Kerry re-establishes himself as an example of how big a distinction there is between his brand of world citizenship and that of George W. Bush's.

Open question to Kenneth Blackwell: how much grub money were you promised in exchanged for the Diebold deal that short-changed mostly minority precincts to favor your Republican apparatus at the expense of a New England liberal, whose policies would frankly have helped the citizens of your state?

How much blood money to cheat on the Constitution, Ken? Enough to fund your race for the Governor's mansion?

5. 1K would be a thousand, 1M is a million
with which they could do a few things, I reckon.

8. Really? The financial shorthand I've always seen is
Edited on Tue Apr-05-05 07:25 PM by stopbush
$1M = a thousand, $1MM is a million. M=mille, latin for $1,000. MM=a thousand thousand. In fact, the FDIC recommends using M as shorthand for 1000:

Numbers/Dollar Amounts - In financial schedules, round to the nearest thousand and omit 000. In narrative comments, "M" as an abbreviation for thousands is acceptable. Throughout a Report, round consistently, including ECC comments. For example, avoid using $2.5MM, $2,500M, and $2,500,000 interchangeably.

http://www.fdic.gov/regulations/safety/manual/section16-1.html

I've seen the "K" used only for salary designation, like $100k.

I've never seen the M used to denote a million, so it threw me for a loop.

10. I see what you mean, I think it was journalistic shorthand
Since the money in the story, such as it is, does add up to a million.

Looking it up in my AP Stylebook, it recommends not using the letter K for money. So the style differs depending on whether you're speaking financially or journalistically in a story.

7. Not a giver, eh?
I'm not as up on DeLay as I should be.

I wonder if Open Secrets would tell me something.
