what's with all the religion on TV
commercials selling books or DVD's, public service spots, propaganda/advertising for particular denominations, TV shows . . .

It's becoming clear that Murka is not a secular society.

1. It has become a theocracy, right before our very eyes. With a
little luck, we can have a government like Iran.

21. The medieval Christian equivalent was "Deus Vulte"
"God wills it". In the First Crusade, huge armies clashed, one shouting "God is great!" and the other shouting "God wills it!". And they meant the same God.

4. So................
....religious programming shouldn't be allowed to be broadcast (assuming they pay the same amount for their air time) and religious products shouldn't be allowed to be sold (assuming they pay the same amount for their ad time)? All religion should be sequestered behind closed doors? Is that it?

9. That's not what I said at all, though it may be true.
although I punctuated badly, "What's with . . ." is a question. I think Murkan businesses market whatever is selling. Why are they selling religion more than they used to?

Has the market for religious doodads, books and DVD's grown? If so, why? Or have some businesses decided to use the widest bandwidth communications channel in Murka (advertising) to promote their dogmatic propaganda?

(NOTE: I also think Murkans buy pretty much whatever is being marketed, but that's another story.)

17. "Why are they selling religion more than they used to?"
Gee..........maybe because they've figured out that when they make it available, people are buying it more than they used to. (a/k/a "If you build it, they will come.") If it didn't sell, they wouldn't be wasting their time and money producing the ads and programming. Religious musicians, religious writers, religious doodad-makers have just as much right to hawk their wares as anyone else. And the producers of religious programming have just as much right to have their shows aired as anyone else. Check the First Amenement. It's in there.

Don't want to buy their junk? Don't. Don't want to watch their shows? Change the channel. Heaven knows I do! But to deny them their voice in the free market place just because we don't like, or at least disagree with, their message (or their products) would be discriminatory. Didn't work when the racists tried to do it to the blacks. Didn't work when the homophobes tried to do it to the gays. To paraphrase Obi-Wan Kenobi, try to silence them and they "will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine".

24. what free marketplace? I'm unaware of any free marketplace anywhere.
Do you think there is no propaganda component?

Usually, first-wave marketing in a new market segment is not for products filling demand. It is for products and messaging intended to create demand.

I still haven't advocated denying them access to the airwaves (or fiber waves as the case may be). I don't need to check the First Amendment (although we'd better check it quick while it still exists).

What about the tax issue? If the Mormons (or whomever) want me to buy a book or they want to market their product to the public, they should pay taxes for the "right" to participate in the marketplace, don't you think?

29. I can't imagine Pagans being allowed
as much, or Muslims, for that matter. And it's not just commerce; it's programming as well. It's bad enough that I have THREE Christian channels among the eight "free" channels I get without cable, now I'm getting "faith in America" on the networks too!

And no, you didn't advocate denying them anything, you merely asked why religion is everywhere on television these days, which is a valid enough question. If the main topic on TV were drag racing, everyone would naturally wonder what was going on-and they wouldn't be trying to get into a flame fest with you because of it.

36. If the entity selling is for-profit...
....which I assume most of the Christian music CDs and many of the books are, then they're paying taxes already.

If the selling entity qualifies as a not-for-profit and they're selling whatever to raise funds (and that's indicated), then I don't care, any more than I care when AARP sells their memberships or advertises "their" life or auto insurance programs, or the Girl Scouts sell their cookies through which they raise funds.

As for which outfits should be in which category, I leave that to the IRS because they know the specifics of those laws better than I do, besides which, it really doesn't concern me all that much. I don't see what the seller's tax status has to do with whether they can air programming or sell products so long as they're paying for the time like everyone else and operating within the law.

I really, truly, honestly, sincerely think most of this kind of bellyaching is frankly pretty petty and counter-productive. And flies directly in the face of everything that liberalism has stood for through most of my adult life, by the way. As I indicated before, if you want to stir the far right-wing Christians up twice as much and get them to throw three times as much money and pressure at the Republicans, just keep trying to shut them up and lock them in a closet. I can just about guarantee you, it'll work like a charm.

religious visions peaked in the early spring when nutrition was at its poorest and the bread had mold on it that produced an LSD-like substance. Just try to get some blotter acid and have a decent sandwich.

8. Today at 'Michaels' Craft store, I couldn't find any...
_
Today at 'Michaels' Craft store, I couldn't find any 'stickers' that had anything to do with the 'Solar System', ya know, 'Planets'.

After spending a good 30 minutes searching, I finally asked for help, and the reply I got was 'over on the other side, you can by the scale models where you can make one, but no, sorry, no stickers'

I shook my head and replied, 'Have the Bible Freaks Threatened to Boycott Michaels too?', 'How can you have nothing on the 'Planets?'

(If you haven't ever been in a 'Michaels', they have complete aisles filled with nothing but little fun stickers)

She shrugged her shoulders, I shook my head, and with that I proceeded to go F*ck Myself.

14. Just maybe we should follow Jesus on this
"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

28. It's even found its way into sports!
Example: After Saturday's nat. semifinal between Illinois and Louisville, CBS thrust a mike at MVP Roger Powell of Illinois. The first thing out of Powell's mouth?

"First, I'd like to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ."

:wtf:

What about Mom, Dad, Sis, his junior high school coach, and Fluffy the cat? Don't they rate?

Then again, J.C. is said to have had a better than passable Jump Shot...

And ponder this: I snapped the tube off in disgust after the initial remark, so I did not see whether they even interviewed anyone from Louisville. If they did, however, I would be VERY surprised if any of them had mentioned God or Jesus! "Well, I guess the Big Guy isn't really that much of a Cardinals fan after all..." It's always the winners who trip over their shoelaces to thank the Almighty; always the guy who scores a TD kneeling in the end zone, never the schmuck who honks an easy FG (*cough* Doug Brien *cough*) crossing himself. Hmmmmmmmmmm...... isn't comfort supposed to be one of the big drawing cards in religion?

47. "We're being conditioned."
I absolutely agree with you. The past two weeks of CNN & MSNBC nonstop coverage of Schiavo & the Pope is making my skin crawl. This is not just bad programing decsions, this is orchastrated propaganda meant to "condition" us.

When the post Schiavo debacle polls came out and showed that even most religious people have not completely lost their minds, that they still understood on some level the seperation of church & State, the media kept on beating the drum of selling the "culture of life". Randell Terry was interviewed repeatedly, never once a mention of his inciting murder of abortion doctors.

Then once Mrs. Schiavo passed, immediate attention, 24/7, to the Pope & his impending death. Every CNN & MSNBC show devoted almost every minute on air to the Pope. Now that he has passed, only a few, short minutes have been used to discuss anything but the Pope.

This is beyond creepy, it is downright scary.
