Can you believe Henry Cisneros is still being investigated?
During the eight-year reign of Bill Clinton as president, Congress appointed seven separate independent counsels to investigate him, costing taxpayers tens of millions of dollars. But not even the trials and tribulations of Bill and Hillary can match the story of independent counsel David M. Barrett's still ongoing investigation of Henry Cisneros, Clinton's HUD Secretary and one-time rising star in the Democratic Party.

The Clinton administration became embroiled in independent investigation after independent investigation into such subjects as Whitewater, Vince Foster's suicide, the White House travel agency firings, and, of course, Monica Lewinsky. The House of Representatives, led by Newt Gingrich and its new Republican majority, also sucked Clinton's HUD Secretary, Henry Cisneros, into the money pit of an independent investigation.

In March 1995, some three years into Clinton's first term, his Attorney General Janet Reno officially asked Congress to appoint an independent investigator to look into allegations that Cisneros was paying hush money to a former mistress, Linda Medlar, who billed herself as a political fundraiser. The affair became public when Medlar sued Cisneros claiming he had reneged on his commitment to continue paying her $4,000 a month to keep quiet about their prior affair. In addition, she alleged Cisneros lied to the FBI about her hush money when that agency executed the routine background check normal for a cabinet-level appointee.

Congress named attorney David M. Barrett as head counsel to investigate the allegations against Cisneros. Amazingly, Barrett's office is still operating at this moment after spending more than $21 million to date.

------------

A total of $22 million+ dollars spent on invesitgating Cisneros and all that was uncovered was an affair. Now I'm wondering if it was only $7 million spent on Clinton's affair.

What a waste!!!!!!

1. I'm so glad the government is using my tax dollars to investigate
married people's affairs instead of supplying our service men and women with the military gear they need.

I'm so glad the government is using my tax dollars to investigate married people's affairs instead of investigating what king* knew prior to our invasion of Iraq.

I'm so glad the government is using my tax dollars to investigate married people's affairs instead of investigating prince cheney's connection to the energy corporations and why he went duck hunting with scalia.

I feel much safer now.

4. He's a dangerous man to the Republicans....
A smart, good-looking Mexican-American who went to Texas A&M. They had to take him down.

The affair was not a secret or a brief fling; he let the world (Texas Monthly, at least) know he was in love but eventually stayed with his wife. He paid the ex-girlfriend because she claimed she couldn't get a job, afterwards. It wasn't really hush money.
