It's always been my understanding that priests are not required to take a vow of poverty. Hence, the ever increasing finery of the uniform and the ever increasing lavishness of a priest's living standard the higher up the corporate ladder he ascends.

Nuns, on the other hand, do take a vow of poverty and a vow of submission to papal authority. Thus, you'll never see a nun in anything other than the standard "habit", riding around in a limosine, or living in elegant circumstance like some priests and all bishops and cardinals.

The Catholic church is an onerously patriarchal system.

If I remember correctly, the priests in my diocese usually made something like 12-14k per year. However, housing is usually provided so their costs are food and other items.

The Vatican holds acres and acres of solid gold objects and art stacked to the rafters in dusty warehouses. Stuff that's been there for hundreds of years, so much no one person could even look at all the stuff in a lifetime and it pours in every day from poor people all over the world, thinking the V needs more of their sacrifices to get into heaven. The place is 1000 times as opulent as the Hearst castle.

The Pope doesn't wear fine fashion. He wears the same garments over and over again. The Pope (like all ordained Catholics) has taken a vow of poverty. He doesn't eat extravagant meals.

I'm sorry to hear that you are an atheist because the Church at one point acquired some art and built some over extravagant places of worship.

As a number of posters point out, the Pope lives extremely richly, but none of the art, gold, libraries, property and furnishings are his, so he has nothing to leave to any relatives, but the Church reclaims all.

The purpose of his celibacy is related to this lifetime wealth. If the Pope had children, the old reasoning went, he would be tempted to convert the churches wealth to his own, so he could leave it to his family.

Celibacy means he has no spouse and therefore no heirs, and he is not tempted to convert the property to his own.

The original purpose of celibacy had less to do with sex, or having a wife or partner than with assuring he had no SONS.
