Bush bypasses Senate to close bases

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2005-04-02-bush-base-closings_x.htm

President Bush, brushing aside a stall tactic by Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., appointed the nine-member commission that will determine military bases closings without waiting for Senate confirmation.

Bush made the appointments while the Senate was in recess, the White House announced Friday night. The recess appointments prevent delays as the commission prepares to make the first round of base closings in a decade.

-snip-

Recess appointments expire when the Senate's current session ends, in this case in 2006. However, the commission probably will have concluded its work by the end of this year.

-snip-

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld must recommend bases for closure or consolidation by May 16.

Appointed to the commission were:

_Principi, of California, chairman.

_Former Rep. James H. Bilbray of Nevada.

_Former Assistant Defense Secretary Philip Coyle of California.

_Retired Adm. Harold W. Gehman Jr. of Virginia.

_Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Sue Ellen Turner of Texas.

_Former Rep. James V. Hansen of Utah.

_Retired Army Gen. James T. Hill of Florida.

_Samuel Knox Skinner of Illinois, former chief of staff and transportation secretary under President George H.W. Bush.

_Retired Air Force Gen. Lloyd Warren Newton of Connecticut.
-snip-

the bushgang needs the staff/troops on these bases to move to the 9 new bases he is building in Afghanistan and the new bases he is building in Iraq, and the new bases he is building in one of the 'stans' I can't spell.

as for his trickyness in getting this going - he has some crafty lawyers working for him. we need a list of their names.

8. Why do you say that he loathes the military, when he uses the military to
secure oil in the ME?

12. that's not what the military is for, and furthermore, the reasons he
sent them there were all lies, and he sent them there without the proper equipment, and he sent insuffecient numbers to keep the peace.

If he respected and appreciated our soldiers, why hasn't he attended one funeral? Why do they still not have the proper equipment...why is he slashing veteran's benefits? Why did he lie to send them to war?

5. Do you think the rethugs are finally seeing the weed for what he
is and are turning their backs on him? Do you think they are waking up and their opposition to his agenda will continue?

I hope so, I hope that is the splintering of the party I hear! :bounce:

10. I know, how sad for him -- NOT!
But I can't help but wonder if the 20 year veteran may have some pull in the party, given that he has been a part of the political scene for 20 years or so and the weed is a lame ducker!

party would be today if they had had the good sense to choose Thad Cochran for a leader instead of Trent Lott. Lott still has power, but its fun to see Bush diss him and get away with it.

Thad Cochran heading the senate appropriations committee will guarantee the flow of federal money to Mississippi continues, and likely our bases will stay, too. We bitch about the "federal sugar tit" down here but we sure do suck hard when its pointed our way.

17. I agree with you
But I don't think Chester is willing to give up his power just yet. He may see that the rumblings of the true GOPers are anti-weed and he may seize upon that.

Did you see my post in the Mississippi forum about the fellow that has said he will run against Lott in 2006 (and Lott's camp said the he has not decided to retire).

18. Yes...I've heard Erik Fleming speak and he's very eloquent.....
He is a "real" Democrat and I'll be inclined to support him in that race, depending on who else the Dems might run (If Mike Moore runs, all bets are off. He has my support 100%)

19. Mike Moore - I was hoping he would run against elephant babar
and kick him out of office. I would think he has a personal interest in that office, given Babar and the repukes are trying to pillage the tobacco fund.

If he ran, I would vote for him too.

6. He's a prick! Frankly, I'm getting tired of gathering here daily to
do nothing but bitch about these assholes. If we stood with courage, shoulder to shoulder, against these evil, maniacal madmen...MAYBE, just maybe we could turn things around!

Peace!

11. fooj - don't be angry about this thread, many of us are not bitching
we are wondering if the little ole rethug party is cracking, splintering, experiencing in-fighting that will make it easier to get impeachment proceedings underway, once all of the doodoo that has been piling up underneath him and his admin is finally revealed!

Be proactive, be vigilante, but don't dismiss the bitching and the discussion.

:hi:

7. America's "Strong Man"
Those of us who grew up during the Cold War recognize Bush's style of leadership as that of the "Strong Man" -- otherwise known as the Dictator.

He certainly acts boldly, and let's face it folks -- the opposition is so weak that he gets away with it every time.

Here's his strategy: I think he knows that this is going to weaken his support among non-rich conservatives and militarists and in the South in the short term, but as his next step is to move these bases into the Middle East, into extremely tenuous and dangerous new environments, our serving men and women are going to be so stressed and vulnerable that when the Bushistas once again pipe the tune of "SUPPORT THE TROOPS!", the sheep will once again fall into line and kiss his chimperial behind.

I KNOW Democrats will not oppose him in this -- so let's see what Sane Republicans do, if they have any spine to stand up to America's Strong Man.

14. Bush supports our troops!
By closing bases, he gives many patriotic Americans freedom from gainful employment and reinforces just how much he cares about the troops, like he did while cutting veterans' benefits and refusing to attend the funerals of soldiers dead from the war he declared.
