I think that I know what the Popes view on GLBT was and why that is offnsive.
What i don't know, is what his issues with women were?
Im not catholic and paid little attention to him...

2. pope re women
No choice, no abortion..

No contraception..

No females in the clergy..

There's a lot of irony in his position on reproductive rights, ie, being against them, since that would actually promote more poverty, disease, and starvation in the third world countries he was so touted for wanting to help.

Call me cynical.. but doesn't a higher population living in poverty and oppression mean more Catholics and an opportunity for missionizing?

4. Sorry..
didnt mean to post and run.

ok, so he was against abortion. There are democrats that would rather not have abortion. The contraception issue is that there should be abstinance from sex.
Without trying to be to much of a smartass, in my reply, if there were more abstinence would there not be less catholic children?
Again, i am not catholic, but sex out of wedlock is pretty much taboo in most religions isnt it?

The women in the clergy, well, not being a catholic myself, doesnt bother me to much.
I am certainly not saying that women shouldnt be allowed to be priests, but if it is the tradition of their church that men be priests, so be it. I do not know of any female Imams in the Islamic faith, nor do I know of any female Rabbis (I really do not know of any so if there is one, please let me know)
There are many female ministers in the protestent churches however.
So the man was firm in his beliefs. I don't see that as belittling women.but that is just my 2 cents..back into the wall, I crawl for a bit.

As far as I know, the Pope was against the use of birth control even within marriage.

3. He lost his own mother when he was 9 years old.
I think that the Holy Father had a very definite view of women. He deeply respected them, but used Mary as the model for women. I wouldn't say he had issues with them, but he had very uncompromising views.
