Post Your Favorite Shot Of The Pope! Here's Mine! (My Nod To Mopaul)
Edited on Fri Apr-01-05 08:08 PM by DistressedAmerican
After a long day of bashing on His Holiness, I felt it fair to try to go for a slightly positive spin.

Here's my favorite shot of the Pope. Although I'm not sure, I assume he is playing with kids. Seemed fitting as he is well know for his work with youth worldwide.

Just for the record that move is better done with the hands turned upside down, palms in. My mom used to call it the Jr. Birdman!

IT WAS A GOOD LOOK FOR THE OLD GUY!

The picture says everything, the Pope looks like he is expressing how we all feel!, and the shrub sits their so unaware of his stupidity. Shrub is sitting there with the script that Rove gave him to impress. The Pope is no way impressed with the town idiot.

The pope, "Please forgive me Lord, but, could anyone be more stupid?

Bush, "Rove told me to say this to you, I had nothing to do with what I am saying."

George just reminds me of a little boy who was just reprimanded by a parent.

Thank you.

In spite of his rigid moral rules, he still love/d/s people, even those who broke those rules.

The man defined his limits,...but loved in spite of them. I love him back, for that!!!

She clearly has either a deformity or serious injury to her hand....it makes the picture all the more poignant because who knows what suffering she has been through and yet the gentleness between the two in that moment.

24. I'm not Catholic
but the fact he could forgive the man who shot him twice, says a lot about what kind of man he really was. I don't agree with a lot of what the Pope has said, but he's done quite a few remarkable things. I don't know if I would be as forgiving as he is.

22. I hope this comes across the way I mean it to...
if it doesn't and I accidentally upset someone please let me know so we can talk it out.

*deep breath* Here goes.

I see many of these pictures and they make me smile...and then they make me sad. You can tell the man had a sense of fun and a love of life and that there was a compassionate, caring human at his core. I wonder what he could have been without many of the constraints of his position and the politics of the Vatican. But mostly it makes me sad because I want to like him and just can't for other reasons.

I really am sorry for those of you who are upset today. :grouphug:

48. Oh my. I know. I'm not Catholic either, but he is an easy man
to love. He shared himself with everybody. He is/was a wonderful human being.

I do not agree with a lot of Catholic tenants; but, that does not keep me from appreciating a man who has made a tremendous difference in this world from sheer love, sometimes gentle and sometimes tough.

Think just a minute. With him gone, doesn't * loom scarier. Hell, doesn't the whole world look and feel scarier. Whether I agreed with him or not, I always trusted him to be as good as he could be. You can't say that about too many people.

I've loved all of these pictures, and am not ashamed to say that I have been crying off and on all day. I will miss this man tremendously. I predict an amazing outpouring of love from people of all faith.

Thanks everybody for the pics.

84. I know what you mean
I'm not Catholic either but looking at these pictures make you really see him for who he is. He definietly appeared to love children and life and that one picture of him forgiving the man who shot him was amazing. I could never do that. He even tried to get through Bush with Iraq. Now that must've been difficult.

78. No, seriously--
have you ever seen those characters? Derived from D & D, all faux medieval, often carrying Cross staffs just like that. They are usually wizards or priests.

I don't play videogames, but I did play D & D with my kids when they were young, and some of the illustrations looked just like that. And I have a friend who plays videogames, and some of those characters also look like that.

I also read a fair amount of SF and fantasy, and the descriptions of some characters in such fiction--well, you get my drift.

I am amazed any of that stuck with me. Well, that's not true it was an elective. I wanted to be there.

Wrote a great paper on an anti-war painting from the 60's that was in the university museum and it was failed. They said it was WAY TOO GOOD to be undergrad work. It was a painting from their collection for Christ sake. What did they think I just Googled (altavista or something back then) it?

Oh that still burns me! Finishing a Ph.D. now. Wonder where those weasel TA's are today.

119. I saw it too at the age of 9. I wasn't impressed. Wish I had been.
We had the same statue in my church. As we rode past on the conveyer belt I couldn't figure out what the big deal was. Some thirty years later I saw it in St. Peters while on a trip to Rome. It's just as you go in the main door to the right.

This time I was impressed despite the fact that they keep it behind bulletproof glass ever since some religious nutcase went after it with a hammer some years back and bashed in the faces and the Virgin Mary's hand. The restorers did a wonderful job but, sadly, it's not all Michelangelo.

I now wish that I'd paid more attention as a kid.

101. I'm not Catholic
And when he wrote in his autobiography that I was a part of "the new ideology of evil", it made it very easy for me to say that this man is not a good man.

If someone said that jews are evil or women are evil, we wouldn't be extolling their virtues on DU. But if you hug a few children and say that you are against the war (without any significant call to action) all of a sudden you're okay?

This man and his policies are a threat to my life. So how is he a good man?

If someone was a virulent racist, would we say "I disagree with him on some social issues, but..."

Once again, GLBT people and non-christian women are expendable.

Once had an argument with some folks coming out of a church in Mexico. As mass was letting out in the town I work in while I'm down there, A dog got hit by a guy in a bike. Mostly they consider dogs ratline nuisances.

Must have been over a hundreds folks that saw it and they all started laughing like crazy. I mentioned that was not very Christan of them. They objected until I brought up San Fransisco. That shut them right up.

133. Kneeling at Ghandi's grave:
Let me just say thank you for this thread. I can't think of a more perfect way to honor the life of someone who is passing. May this become a DU tradition.

John Paul II kneeling and praying at the tomb of Gandhi
in New Dehli in 1986.

"Today as a pilgrim of peace, I have come here to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi, hero of humanity." he said in praise
of the Hinduist leader.

I'm not Catholic, I'm not even Christian and although I disagree with the Catholic church on many, many issues, I've always had a certain level of admiration for Pope John Paul II. One thing we can all probably agree on is that the next Pope has very big shoes to fill.

138. He Really Made An Effort To Reach Out To People Of Other Faiths
That I respect. He has worked tirelessly for the poor. That I respect.

My issues are really issues with the church as a whole rather than this one person (albeit very powerful person). I have a really issue with the "No Condoms" stance for example. Suck a policy in the face of a global epidemic is clearly ill advised. I see it as an example that the church is far more concerned with saving souls than saving lives.

Glad to see this is such a popular thread. Thanks to everyone who is posting!

Remember this skit from SNL? Father Guido Sarducci loved Pope John Paul II

Bill Murray: Father Guido Sarducci was among the two hundred and forty traveling press people who covered the Pope's United States tour. I bet it was quite a thrill. How did it go, Father?

Father Guido Sarducci: It was. It was a real thrill, Bill. It was just terrific. But now I'm a little down. I have what my psychiatrist calls "post-papal depression." ... Was such a high, you know, bein' on that tour and now it's over. Only thing I didn't like about the tour was the merchandising. They had, like, Pope T-shirts, Pope buttons, posters, banners, anything you can think of. You know, you can call me anti-materialistic if you want to but I just don't think it's right for somebody to make a T-shirt, put a person's picture on it, and then not to give that person part of the percentage of the profits. ... I mean, look at this. It's amazing. If you buy T-shirt like this, it's not just for the T-shirt you buy it -- it's because the Pope is on it. If you just want a T-shirt, you can go to J. C. Penney's 'stead of going through all the traffic and crowds. But the Pope, from this T-shirt, I'll tell you what he got. He got absolutely zero. It was a rip-off. First, they did it to Mr. Bill, now the Pope. ...

And it was - it was the same thing with his record album. He was in Poland couple of months ago and he was just singin' some songs with these Polish students. Somebody must've had a cassette tape recorder. First thing, there's albums out all over Europe and now even in the United States. This is it. They said this has shipped double platinum. ... That's a lot of albums. And the Pope gets absolutely no percentage, no royalties from this whatsoever. And, you know, I hate to plug this album 'cause, you know, it bein' so bad to him, but the truth is, it's a pretty good album. ... The man can sing, he really can. ... I mean, he's no Smokey Robinson but ... if you like Polish folk songs, this is the album for you. ...

A lot of the Popes have made albums but none of 'em sold very well. Pope Paul VI, he had three albums out. The best seller -- but it was not hardly good seller at all, I don't think it even made the charts -- is what they call his "White Album" ... Came out in the early seventies. And it had a really nice poster inside of him. ... This one's kind of soiled 'cause I had it pinned up on my refrigerator for years. ... But my favorite Pope Paul VI album was his second album. Was called "The Second Collection." Well, this was the first Pope album that featured modern graphics. It's kind of psychedelic. ... I like it. He looks-- Kind of smiling there -- looks pretty good. ... My favorite Pope album of all, though, was made in 1955 by Pius XII. Kind of what you call an "oldie" nowadays. You know, Pius XII has gotten a lot of bad press. They say he was aristocratic. He thought he was better than everybody else. But, say what you want about him, the man made a very, very good album. Was called, "Here's Looking Down at You" ... It just never got the push that it should have but I hope now that there's more interest in Popes, they might reissue this one.

It's amazing to me all the interest in the Pope last couple weeks. I think it's because of John Paul's visit, personally, but, you know, whatever the reason, people are buyin' these posters that show all of the Popes and people want to know what their names are, what their real names are, when they was livin', when they died, all that stuff. And, going along with this Papal mania, I've kind of designed a contest about the Popes. It's called "Find the Popes in the Pizza" ... All two hundred and fifty-four Popes, they're in here. ... And, what we're gonna do in about one minute, we're gonna put a close-up of this on your screen and, you at home, all you have to do is get some, like, wax paper, any kind of paper you can see through and paste it to your screen -- or tape it, whatever you want -- and all you gotta do is get a pencil and draw a circle around every place you see a picture of a Pope. And, while we're doing this--

Well, I think what I'm gonna do for the prize, whoever wins -- you know, finds the most Popes -- they'll get to have a button that I designed myself. I noticed on the tour, the best selling button was this. It says, "I Got a Peek at the Pope" ... And I designed a button that I think even more people can relate to. It says, "I saw the Pope on TV" ... This is what you win. And now, I think, we're about ready. So while you're looking at the pizza for thirty seconds, I'm gonna play a cut from Pius XII's album. ... Here is Pius XII singing "On the Sunny Side of the Street" ... And now find the Pope in the pizza. Good luck to you. All two hundred and fifty-four.

Some are easy to find, some are hard. ... Here's a little clue for you. Most of the Popes have red faces. ... Here's another clue. One of them is in the right side of the screen. ... Behind the desk.

As a Young Man
In this photo, a 19-year-old Karol Wojtyla, second from right, embraces an unidentified colleague during the construction of a military camp building in July 1939 in Western Ukraine, then eastern Poland. Two months before the outbreak of World War II in Europe, Wojtyla, according to biographers, attended a military training camp in Western Ukraine.

165. good point -- one doesn't think of the Pope as having parents ...
(recalling that Groucho Marx aside to a priest, who'd just said that his mom was a big fan -- "I didn't know you guys were allowed to have mothers") -- but of course, they all do!

152. The Pope & the US Presidents...
(I posted these in a separate thread which has dropped off, so I decided to add them here since I thought they were interesting contrasts!)

According to the AP description, this was taken at the Pope's public audience, the day after GWB had Karla Faye Tucker executed. The Pope had directly appealed to * for clemency.
