Dear BuzzFlash:
My two cents on drilling in the ANWR ...
Some years ago I worked for the largest oil industry information service in the world. One day while chatting with one of the company's geologists, someone commented on the existing Alaska pipeline. They said they thought our country must have needed the oil, or we wouldn't have built the pipeline. The geologist gave a surprising response: "Unfortunately, we don't use the oil from the pipeline. It's sour (meaning sulfurous) and would cost too much to clean up for use in the US because of our air quality standards. We have been selling that oil to other countries that have less stringent air standards." I remember being shocked that we, as a country, had been talked into a pipeline across pristine wilderness, for oil we don't even use.
Now they want to drill in another beautiful wilderness. It certainly would be interesting to see the results of the test holes up there to see if the oil is "sweet" (good) or "sour" (not good), and whether it's oil that will be used in the US, or whether it will be sold elsewhere. If sold elsewhere, who will profit?
