... statutory law, and nothing else.

Consulting any external source, be it the Bible or the Koran or the Boy Scout Handbook, would effectively act as a "backdoor" to the legislative process... and allow 12 people (or fewer, if influence is unequal) to turn our society into a theocracy one case at a time.
