"'Diabesity,' a Crisis in an Expanding Country"
NYTimes essay that every Americvan should read (registration required).

We are killing ourselves with our diet. The corporations don't help.

I have seen diabetes and it is not pretty.

1. Really good article - thanks for posting!
Below are a few snips. (Remember one can use www.bugmenot.com to register to read an article :-) )

<snip>
An estimated 18.2 million Americans now have diabetes, 90 percent of them the environmentally influenced type that used to be called adult-onset diabetes. But adults are no longer the only victims - a trend that prompted an official change in name in 1997 to Type 2 diabetes.

<snip>

The major causes, Dr. Kaufman says, are "an economic structure that makes it cheaper to eat fries than fruit" and a food industry and mass media that lure children to eat the wrong foods and too much of them. "We have defined progress in terms of the quantity rather than the quality of our food," she wrote.

<snip>

Taking other factors into consideration, consuming fast food two or more times a week resulted, on average, in an extra weight gain of 10 pounds and doubled the risk of prediabetes over the 15-year period.

Other important factors in the diabesity epidemic, Dr. Kaufman explained, are the failure of schools to set good examples by providing only healthful fare, a loss of required physical activity in schools and the inability of many children these days to walk or bike safely to school or to play outside later.
<snip>

-------

There's truth in these words:
"The major causes, .....a food industry and mass media that lure children to eat the wrong foods and too much of them.

2. A lousy food system. When was the last time anyone bought a
Hershy's chocolate bar that was bad? (I actually bought one once - been overheated to long - that's one in 50 years). When was the last time you bought fruit that was tasteless or otherwise unedible? Yesterday? Last week? I have bought lots of unripe fruit that goes rotten before it is fit to eat. Same with veggies. Look at a grocery store - all the real food is on the walls. The rest is processed and most is garbage.

3. FAILURE to discuss TYPE 1 diabetes....NOT CAUSED BY OBESITY

and not caused by diet at all....that 10 % is over 1.8 MILLION Americans, the BIGGEST childhood disease KILLER....

this I-CON (Iron-curtain Corporate Owned Media) manipulation of REAL news...attempts to create a smoke-screen over the 1.8 MILLION CHILDREN dying from diabetes, who cannot get life-saving insulin/syringes/blood testing equipment under the bush* health care FAILURE....

you probably know someone suffering the devastating effects of TYPE 1 diabetes...and like many others....are you DOING SOMETHING? or are you COMPLICIT IN YOUR SILENCE???? just sitting on your couch, while 1.8 MILLION children are KILLED by bush* health care POGROM....it's a deliberate attempt by bush* to kill the most vulnerable Americans...children with Type 1 Diabetes...

Don't let the I-CON roll over this with their 'oh my...it's their diet' LIES LIES LIES.....confront bush*....STAND UP for the children...

4. Great article!
Only twenty one minutes of exercise is needed accordingly. And losing 10 lbs. in 90 days didn't seem like a big feat to me.

The older one becomes the harder it is to get into an exercise habit. Diet is extremely important.
