Mexican fans taunt US soccer team
our friends to the South--it seems things aren't as peachy as bush* says

...The crowd booed the U.S. national anthem and a spattering of fans chanted "Osama! Osama!" before play started, and shortly after Lewis' goal.

About 100 people gathered for a peaceful celebration near Mexico City's Angel of Independence monument following the game. A few tried to burn a small American flag but ended up trampling on it.

2. No surprise. Same as last year.

Of course, Fox and the MSM likely overplay such stories. Still, the home field advantage for Mexico is massive -- and one has to suspect that the crowd has something to do with that -- no matter who they play. The US is 6-2-1 against them over the last nine games, including today's loss, yet we haven't been able to touch them down there.

3. I'll relay the story that I told here last year:
My American friends who live on the island of Isla Mujeres, MX took the ferry over to Cancun to see the movie, "Pearl Harbor" when it first came out. When the movie showed the part where the Japanese planes roared over and started the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the whole audience of Mexicans jumped up and clapped and cheered. My friends just slumped down in their seats, mortified, as they had many Mexican friends back on the island, and now wondered if those friends were as true as they seemed. Quite an eye-opener for my friends.

4. We are as hated as Nazi Germany!
Pretty bad when a terrorist like Bin Laden is more sympathetic to the Mexicans than Bush.

10. please
We are talking about a game. Find me a single Soccer game were the winning side's fans did not taunt the losers.

11. Simply part of their culture
This display is part of their soccer culture. I know its tough, but do not take it seriously. It's meant to psych out the players on the opposite team.

The world is full of terrorists, it seems. Our war on terror could be our Waterloo. Or nuclear winter.

14. classless, to be sure
Edited on Sun Mar-27-05 09:06 PM by Blue_Tires
but hey, words and chants don't hurt us, right? at least it's not outright violence against visiting fans (Turkey), or unbridled racist chants against black players (Spain), or players giving a 'heil hitler' salute after a big win (Lazio), or facist fans giving the same salute to each other (Real Madrid)...

It needs to be said that when Germany played Iran last October, some in the crowd gave nazi salutes to humiliate the germans....Stuff like this goes on...And does FoxSports REALLY want to open the can of worms on how classy the U.S. crowd was the last time Mexico visited?

FWIW, Mexico (as a soccer team and fanbase) does have a HUGE inferiority complex in this hemisphere...They have never really been accepted by the top footballing nations in South America, and after being treated like outcasts, they have had trouble in recent years with archrival U.S...As far as they are concerned, this WAS their World Cup final (the gods know they will never get out of the qualifying stages in Germany next summer)

17. I've been to soccer games in Mexico
Often the fans in Mexico, that are the loudest and most hostile tend to be the underclass and uneducated. That being said there is a general love/hate relationship that Mexico has with the United States, some of it is deserved but some of it isn't. I lived their for almost a year with family and was surprised to see some of the contradictions. "I love the American people, but I hate the American government"

19. This is probably mostly because of Bush and the occupation of Iraq.
I live in Mexico, and pretty much everyone I talk to here hates Bush and thinks the war sucks.

25. This is usual
The US-Mexico rivalry is extremely intense. During the last World Cup, players on the American team talked about having bags of urine and the like thrown at them when they walked out onto the field at certain venues.

If you've ever watched the two teams play, it's a pretty dirty game (on both sides). No matter what Fox or anyone else says, this is just two neighbors (who mildly dislike each other) venting some emotions. It was mean before W and will continue to be so long after him.

26. Anything goes at soccer games anymore
My brother in Europe tells me he does not take his kids to games anymore because of the chants that hard-core fans use as part of the taunting process.

I wouldn't base our foreign image on what you hear in a soccer field. Soccer-fans are notoriously unreliable sources ;)
