Send your representatives your living wills!
Edited on Sat Mar-26-05 11:12 AM by crispini
Just got this via email. It's brilliant!

Dear Friends: If you’re like me, you’ve been alarmed by the recent federal intervention in the Terri Schiavo case. The silver lining, of course, has been that it has prompted people all over the country to think about and discuss their own end-of-life wishes and to communicate them, in writing, with their loved ones.

However, these issues, personal as they are, are clearly not solely in our hands these days. I have therefore taken the step of sending my living will to my elected representatives, including Rep. Pete Sessions, Sens. John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison, and President George W. Bush.

If you haven’t already written a living will/advance directive, I urge you to do so. I also urge you to send it to your elected federal representatives. (I also shared with them my thoughts on their recent intervention in the case, which was shameful and represented the very worst of political pandering to the Religious Right.)

Please feel free to share this suggestion with any and all friends, relatives, mailing lists, etc.

You can get your representative's contact info at:
http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/

I'm going to fax them right away. Email would work too, but I think fax is better -- I want them to see the entire living will, notary stamp and all. I may even request that they keep it on file, just in case.

Edited to add: if you like and/or you're gonna do this, please kick. the boards are moving fast lately!

1. Don't ask them to keep it on file
DEMAND IT! As your representative they need to keep this on file in case your case is ever brought before the Congress.

2. Why stop at our Reps? Send it to our Senators and the White House!
Let them know that these are our wishes, not what they want!

And yes, to keep them on file when they decide to convene late at night or be up in their jammies to sign a bill interfering with family business and our privacy!

3. Brilliant Idea!
That way if something happens, Sens. Cornyn or Hutchinson or my Rep Barton don't feel the need to pass special legislation on their break.

4. Sounds like a great way to let the people in Washington know how the
people they represent really feel. If they are inundated with millions of these perhaps they will know that they should keep their hands off our personal lives.
