FL R's passing bill telling students to sue professors
snip>
The Academic Freedom Bill of Rights, sponsored by Rep. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, passed 8-to-2 despite strenuous objections from the only two Democrats on the committee.
...
The bill sets a statewide standard that students cannot be punished for professing beliefs with which their professors disagree. Professors would also be advised to teach alternative “serious academic theories” that may disagree with their personal views.

According to a legislative staff analysis of the bill, the law would give students who think their beliefs are not being respected legal standing to sue professors and universities.

Students who believe their professor is singling them out for “public ridicule” – for instance, when professors use the Socratic method to force students to explain their theories in class – would also be given the right to sue.

“Some professors say, ‘Evolution is a fact. I don’t want to hear about Intelligent Design (a creationist theory), and if you don’t like it, there’s the door,’” Baxley said, citing one example when he thought a student should sue.

2. Intelligent Design is neither a theory or "intelligent"
It's just something someone came up with. NOTHING more. So, if this asshole wants profs to teach "serious academic theories" he better not hold his breath for Intelligent Design...on second thought, perhaps he should.

4. Stupid
I heard personal opinions from psych professors and never let it bother me. Of course, how atheist related to factorial designs of experiemtns is beyond me but hey. Of course they would bring up evolution. Is there anything they won't do to promote a theory that states all humans are the result of Adam and Eve's decendants inbreeding marriages?

5. Can we kick Florida out? Maybe cut them off?
Kind of a reverse secession?

Even red state Colorado has not passed that piece of tripe, despite it coming before the General Assembly several times (Horowitz has been pushing it, because until January we had a Repuke Gen. Ass. and Gov. Now, there's no chance it will pass, since we Dems reclaimed the General Assembly.)

Without offending Floridians on this board - anyone can get stuck in hell - wtf? Is it the water?

FL Duers need to move to the keys and expand the Conch Republic.

6. I use the Socratic method in my philosophy classes
so--are the students in Florida going to write lesson plans and review and order books? Isn't it a given that a student is in a class because they don't know all there is to know about a given topic? What credentials do high school grads have to monitor course content.

This is truly bazaar. If I was teaching in Florida I would resign immediately.

BTW don't students in florida read the class description of what will be taught before they sign up for classes, or are the all asses?

PS - maybe if I sign up for a history of florida class I could sue the professor if he/she did not want me to talk about evolution instead of florida history.

10. Actually in retrospect
I would stay and teach as I do now. At this point I'm looking for a fight (or argument). You're right msongs. I'm just a bit fed up at this point.

7. This is why fark.com has a "Florida" tag. Florida is collectively insane.

I believe everything that happens is controlled by leprechauns. No, I can't prove it. Now give me my PhD in particle physics or I'll sue. :silly:

edit: apology in advance to any Floridian DUers who aren't batshit nuts.

9. The reverse of that, take a religion class and a denominational university
Then tell the professor that anyone who believes a crucified man literally rose into the sky and influences lives today is schizophrenic. Double edged sword they're creating here.
