I hadn't made that connection but you're right. I've always admired him for his courage and conviction. My dad and I talked about him a lot during the years we watched my grandmother turn into a vegetable in a nursing home from the effects of Alzheimers.

in jail. Does anyone have an e-mail address or way of getting in touch with him? I'd really like to 'pick his brain.' You know he's not just a pathologist (training I share with him) but he's also extremely well read in classical philosophy, etc.

The people Kevorkian "assisted" were by and large not terminal in any way. Their main problems were a lack of access to pain relief because of the War on Drugs and a lack of a social network of support (many were single people trying to cope with disability without anyone so much as giving a damn about them).

...that the person he finally got locked up for killing said "Wait" right before he died, and Kevorkian's response later was "I didn't understand a word he said anyway."

He's a serial killer obsessed with death. He actively sought out people society wouldn't care about killing, and when death row prisoners evoked too much sympathy, he went for depressed disabled and terminally ill people. The sight of a bunch of people who call themselves progressives essentially baying for blood is unnerving to say the least.

But most people are trained to see this kind of murder as a freedom vs. moralism issue rather than an issue of systemic discrimination against disabled people.

Meanwhile disabled people (whatever our ideology) are screwed from people on the right who want to cut off all our social services and people on the left who think it's totally rational for us to want to die and that if we're checked over by doctors or something then we'll show that we're not really just depressed or lacking pain meds or support. Both sides of which don't tend to understand the concept that disability (of all kinds) is a civil rights issue.
