2. There Is Some Irony
Those people are obviously in severe distress...

We have been told starvation is peaceful....

6. according to hospice
"The Truth About Food and Fluids"

"• Eventually, your loved one will no longer need nourishment for strength, to prevent weight loss or to delay death. Refusal of food and water is a natural part of the dying process. Let the dying person lead the way. Trust that your loved one is following cues from his/her body."

Hearing this from doctors and the folks at hospice is helping my family in dealing with my father's slow decline (from dementia/stroke) and accompanying loss of appetite.

10. I Respect Your Opinion
and I respect the authority of those who say the starvation and dehydration process in terminally ill people can be peacefulbut I also respect the authority of those who hold the contrary position...

As the primary caregiver to my eighty seven year old disabled mom I don't know what I would do in the Schindler's shoes....

20. and in return, I respect you...
Edited on Wed Mar-23-05 04:05 PM by Batgirl
None of us knows absolutely what we would do in this type of situation until we're in it -- all the more reason that it's not an issue for the Feds to interfere with...

But I am comforted by the knowledge that loss of desire for food is a natural part of the body's shutting-down process. My mom in particular was a basket case when my dad started taking in less and less food. She tried to badger him into eating, thinking she was being a good caregiver...until hospice reassured her. If your time comes I hope you will be comforted as well.

24. Not to brag but my dying neighbor ate so much much of my special,
just-for-her Red White & Blue 4th of July blueberry & strawberry trifle, (She's -- was -- a Reep)'til the mornng she died, until the hospice Nurses took it away for fear she would aspirate it.

And she'd made fun (and not nicely) of my "cooking" for years.

16. Well, they have all of their brain intact so they get to FEEL it all.
Schiavo is not feeling anything.

Also, they are most likely eating just tiny amounts of food. That's actually worse in a way. It tells the body there MIGHT be more coming and the hunger pains continue.

Horrible.

19. Those people have functioning brains
and a cerebral cortex, which is why they are suffering hunger pains.

Ms. Schiavo does not have a functioning brain. She doesn't feel pain, but she IS in limbo.

29. The Iraqi children crippled, killed and now starving feel pain, too.
But, they are merely, what's the word, "collateral damage" or something particularly diminishing of their innocent lives by those who monger power.

3. Yes, this is a very good point
How many millions starve today that could be provided food? How many are sick that could get medicine?

God (if exists) help us all.

4. Sadly, there are thousands in my small state that are starving.
Millions who can't get health care to keep them healthy and alive.

Billions in this world who go without the very basic necessities of life.

5. Nominated.
How much food would $200 billion buy? How many plane tickets to sunny Florida to "save" Terri were purchased instead of donating to a food pantry?

12. We interfer where we do not belong and stand by
and do nothing when we should intervene.

We are the richest nation in history - pictures like this shouldn't be able to exist because we should be doing everything in our considerable power to keep all people from living like this.

God forgive us.

God, I feel slimy just for having sarcastically typed that.

ALL human beings deserve better than that. They have ALL their brains intact.

It's ironic that Schiavo was bulimic and wanted to BE thin. :-(

They also bring that compassion back with them.

I'll bet they are pretty disgusted by the latest political ploy twisted in religiosity.
