The same way that fascists have always treated protesters:

We're talking about tens of thousands of children that are now dead. Are you trying to say that American paint is worth more than Iraqi children's lives?

70. You're Right.
Campus police officers were not abusing peaceful protesters at City College in the link I provided. Just ask the campus police and they will tell you that the students were the ones who attacked first. So what if all students and college staff tell a different story. So what if most of these witnesses were not even part of the protest and are therefore "unbiased."

I see that you evaded my question:
"We're talking about tens of thousands of children that are now dead. Are you trying to say that American paint is worth more than Iraqi children's lives?"

Are you going to answer it?

or are you going to quibble over the definition of "campus police officers" versus "campus security officers?"

I think that the Iraqi children deserve better than such quibbling. And the soon-to-be-dead Iraqi children deserve a fair fight at life. And if it means that someone has to spray paint a recruiter station, then so what?

Answer the question:
American paint or Iraqi children, which is worth more?

73. How Predictable.
If you did further reading on the story, you would see that actual police officers were involved, too.

But who cares?! Regardless of whether it's fascist campus police officers or fascist campus security officers (like there's a difference), you predictably evaded the question. You continually evade the question I asked twice now.

Here's the entire section you evaded:

How could they be charged and arrested by the police for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest, if no police officers are present? It's common sense.

Nationalistic phrases like "Support the Troops," "We live in the best country in the world," and worst of all "No grafitti please" trivialize the deaths of fifty freaking thousand Iraqi kids!

Your arguments are sick, twisted and Republican lite. Political activists in this country like Lynne Stewart, Justino Rodriguez, and Steven Kurtz are being abused and/or imprisoned. Worse, innocent people are dying and you're complaining about freaking grafitti!

Screw spray paint. We should all be spilling our blood on the recruiting stations in protest, just like the St. Patrick's Day Four:

57. The station is leased, the civilian landlord will have to fix it
He'll send someone over with a can of paint to get rid of the graffitti. Some recruiter will have to get out there and scrape off the window stuff.

Odds are good that the only ones who get a good look at it will be the recruiters, who are NOT volunteers, for the most part--they are top performers in their own speciality who are shoved off to recruit. The brass counts on the work ethic of these top-shelf kids, who have never done a bad job in their lives, to make their goal. And the kids try like hell, a lot of them go nuts trying to succeed in this environment.

Edited on Wed Mar-23-05 01:22 AM by ultraist
And in with residential leases, the landlord can charge the tenant for damage/repairs of vandalism. (I'm a residential landlord and have partners who own commercial buildings).

The will hire a maintenance company that charges out the nose and effectively bill us.

61. Could be.
I used to have a bunch of GSA contracts, and we always negotiated for the landlord to do the fixing of the plant property. Window displays were the responsibility of the office tenant, but if a window broke, the landlord repaired it.

They do of course have a right to be reimbursed for the expense, and that's most likely in the contract, but it won't be a recruiter out there doing the painting, as this is not maintenance, it is repair.

National City when I was there 1991-1994 was one of the worst parts of San Diego. It has a very large illegal immigration population and gang violence. It was so bad during my service in San Diego that National City or part of it was 'Off Limits' to U.S. Military personnel from dusk till dawn cause of the drive byes, etc.

My Two cents.

PS

Navy Slang for it was, 'National Shitty', the only redeeming thing about the whole areas was its 'Mile of Cars' named because of the large amounts of Car Dealerships.

16. Yes, vandalism..
...we should all be so proud.

Is it okay if those on the right start vandalizing anti-war offices because they think those represent unpatriotic organizations bent on the destruction of the American way of life? Do we think it is acceptable for anti-abortion radicals to vandalize and attack abortion clinics, even if the offices are empty of any persons, because they believe the clinics facilitate murder?

Vandalism is lawless, criminal behavoior. Those who did this should be arrested, charged, and if found guilty made the pay the appropriate fines.

Digusting.

"They should all have their right hands cut off!
That'll teach 'em to express their opinions!"

Did I say that? Didn't I say that whoever vandalized these offices should be arrested, charged, and if found guilty made to pay the appropriate fines? Was that not clear enough? Was that too difficult for you to understand?

Express themselves? I'll ask the question again. Is it acceptable for those on the right to vandalize abortion clinics because they believe such offices facilitate murder? Is it okay for people to vandalize anti-war offices if they believe such organizations harm our troops? If it is not okay for rightwingers to vandalize the offices of groups we might support, how is it somehow acceptable for people we may agree with to vandalize the offices of those we don't?

"Jerkoff."

Now that's intelligent commentary! You really got me there sport.

Vandalism is a crime. Supporting it is unwise. This sort of stuff turns off the average American, it does not make them more sympathetic to the anti-war cause.

in the media, thats for sure, and it isn't hurting anyone...as for your "lawless, criminal behavior" - depends on the target IMO. American military imperialism is what was vandalized, not the frikkin MOMA

33. Depends on the target?
Ummm, who gets to decide what an appropriate target for vandalism is? You?

Anti-abortion fanatics believe abortion is murder just as many American's believe Bush's Iraq adventure is murder. So is it okay for religious fanatics to deface womens clinics because they believe the target is appropriate and afterall - it isn't hurting anyone?

Who gets to decide what is appropriate. That is what elected officials do - create laws that apply to everyone. The law is the law. You can't have a law against vandalism and then decide it only applies to the other side. Your walking on a very slippery slope here.

Vandalizing military recruiter offices is wrong. It should be investigated and the perpetrators prosecuted if found. It is not good advertising either - these types of actions just provide fodder to those who say anti-war groups and individuals are radicals, criminals and unAmerican.

It is one thing to try and educate people through pamphlets, speeches, and news letters, but it's another when it comes to defacement. This is beyond the pale, and I will not support this at all. Vandalism or destruction of property, nevermind the issue of violence, is not the way to get out the message. This is the way of the neo-nazis and the KKK, not the way of conscientious citizens who wish to deliver a message.

Do not say that just because it is "against the law" that it is wrong. Just look at what the Nuremberg Trials said: There is an undeniable obligation to human rights, which transcends the laws of one's government (paraphrasing, of course).

40. Please point out how
my house is contributing to perhaps the most disgusting actions of our time. Please tell me how my home is sending young kids off to their unjustified deaths.

Equating a household with an establishment actively supporting a base campaign of murder and thievery and oppression is wrong and so are you.

Nice try though.

That's what you'd get on my property.

44. I wouldn't applaud vandalism
on your property, unless you were actively aiding an unjustified war of choice, of course.

An "ass beatin'" (as you so eloquently put it) is of no consequence.

By the way, try not to put things in 'macho' terms.

See how it was deleted? Thus, loss of context.

Thanks for the suggstion, although it was unnecessary.

38. If you and your friends wish to make this point
get together some money, rent an office by the recruiting station, and post all your images where their market (young kids) will walk by and see it. It will be there for quite a while. Who knows, the owner might just agree with you and will cut some off the rent.

But this is not the way. I suppose that you agree with that kid who set the Hummers on fire as an Earth First! protest. It is simply vandalism.

Hell, the space rental might just be a good idea...

42. Perhaps
but is it really necessary when more effective, efficient and pure forms of expression are readily available. Look, to oppose something as patently horrible as the war in Iraq is justified, and to me it does not matter if this opposition is carried out through one way or another (there are some boundaries that all people should observe, no matter what the laws say...vandalism against an unjustified war is not one of them). I believe this is (it's not the only way of doing it, of course) the right thing to do against the war in Iraq, because it is an individual's duty to oppose such wrongs.

People must not remain silent.

46. Your free market solution WILL not work here.
Not when a landlord can deny a lease to the group doing so on any basis he likes.

Sorry, but people who trumpet the free market as the solution to things like this also like to turn around and say it's the landlord's right to not lease to such a group- a kind of, "so THERE!" to people who would protest.

So tell me, Mr. Mike, what if the landlord "doesn't want any trouble" in front of his store and thus doesn't rent to the antiwar people?

It's a "free" market, right?

Kind of like other things are "free", eh? ;)

51. The landlord wont pay for that. They will charge US, the taxpayers
Landlords don't pay for vandalism, they charge the tenant and in most commercial leases, the tenant pays ALL maintenance and upfit.

49. Guess whose money will pay to clean this up?
HAHA! Real fucking funny that our hard earned dollars will go to repaint those columns and clean those windows.

It's so funny to waste our tax dollars. This is NOT a constructive act of civil disobedience.

They could have distributed those flyers on cars or handed them out and it would have made a bigger impact. Just a thought. :eyes:

69. It will come out of the military budget
somewhere...probably the Red Cross outreach, or the program that links young mothers, active duty and spouses, to services like WIC which provide nutrition to their infants. They'll take a chunk out of Family Support/Services, or take it out of MILCON so that soldiers will not get decent barracks....or maybe out of the fund that provides those new, desert friendly boots, and issue the leftover forty pound behemoths instead, leaving the E-1 to have to go out and buy the good set.

They'll cut butter before guns. Been there, seen that.

62. So what half you guys seem to be saying...
Is that you're going to take your country back from these fiendish monsters who have stolen it from you, and who are turning a completely deaf ear to anything you say, who are in fact right at this moment blowing up some poor innocent f**kers on the other side of the world, with YOUR money... you're going to do that, you're going to fight the good fight til' the very first window is broken... and then you're going to say, "OH my GOD! Broken glass! WHAT HAVE WE DONE?" and just give up?
I didn't mean to be so harsh with you earlier, Imajika; maybe the two words I was looking for should have been "Wake up!"
I'm not advocating this, necessarily... but it's perfectly understandable in these terrible times we live in, and to say that such people should be arrested and fined--I just really gotta question your priorities there...
Civil disobedience of this sort is an old and honorable tradition. Wasn't the Boston Tea Party a fine example of this "vandalism" you speak of? Should THOSE guys have been arrested and fined too?
People aren't always perfectly rational... but c'mon, some sins are minor league, especially as measured against the tactics of our neocon enemies, who will obviously stop at NOTHING to advance their agenda...
THEY have the money to buy up ALL the storefronts and sidewalks, not to mention EVERY large-circulation newspaper and radio and television station in the world... we 'lil people' have very few alternatives in terms of getting our voices heard...
And on top of all that, have you been paying ANY attention to the events of the last two weeks? It's a SHIT-STORM out there; we're losing ground daily...
I guess it comes down to just how many giant hero-sized crapola sandwiches YOU feel you can stand to be force-fed before you just can't take one more bite.
The reeps should just pass a "law" outlawing dissent of ANY kind... and then we could embrace W as we should've to begin with, and all get back to trying to 'work within the system to affect positive change'...
We sign petitions: "Please, could you PLEEASE just TRY to stop poisoning us so badly EVERY DAY, Mister Leadership Man? (who is SUPPOSED to work for me, but who I will NEVER ACTUALLY MEET or speak to for five minutes because I'm just too small a fish)... like, could you guys even just TALK about SLOWING DOWN on the poisoning of us all, just a LITTLE? PLEEEASE???"
...and guess what? They're not listening.
Isn't it obvious?
They don't care if you're baby's sick. They don't care if you have something bad happen to you that wipes you out; maybe it WAS through no fault of your own, but too bad. Tough luck. There's a new sheriff in town, and new rules. No falling down. If you fall down on the ratwheel even ONCE, you die. Tough luck. 9/11 Changed Everything! Run!
We go to protests. We have to APPLY FOR A LICENSE to try to get our voices heard. Bush is in NY? They put us in a basement somewhere in New Jersey. We're underground cuz they're BURYING US.
Look, I ain't advocatin' NOTHIN'... do what YOUR conscience tells you to do...
And watch out who you confide in... cuz it seems to me there are a whole lot of people on this site who would rather waste energy condemning some of the dissenters, and bringing THEM to 'justice', than to sit up and take notice that, sad as I am to say it, though we feel ourselves informed and properly horrified at it all, we are ONLY JUST getting into the thick of it... and for many, it is much, MUCH later than you think.
DXS
