1. Looks like the Republicans were handed about ten thousand miles of rope
and they shot themselves in the foot with Uzis.

9. That's encouraging.
I hope to God that this has woken up the masses. But I doubt that's the case--Americans are pretty apathetic.

10. Yeah, it's weird. It's like everyone woke up all at once.
I thought that this was just another lie of his to add to the pile. But for some reason, this has caught the attention of the people.

5. so once again our elected officials completely ignore us.
can we put a "fire the incompetent bums" amendment in the constitution for things like the president going to war on shoddy intelligence or congress overstepping their constitutional bounds. No waiting for elections an impeachment by the people. Let us all vote on our leaders performance while in office.

8. I think so. He has no principles, he says and does whatever he needs to
to get the votes.

14. agreed
I think that once this passes we won't hear about it again... but come election time - campaign lit aimed at the far religious right will have Schaivo all over the place. It will be targetted exploitation of the issue - but since the gen public didn't sign on... it will be dropped from the gen public campaigning.

15. At this point, I don't think a lot of the neocons give a rats ass about it
They are only chasing what they think the fundies want to hear. I bet since some fundies look to Bush as a spiritual leader that they would be against it if he was. A real chicken/egg situation.

17. Bush signed a bill in Texas that requires the removal of life
support if you can't pay for it no matter your convictions. A baby was unplugged there against its parents wishes. What about that.

18. ABC poll: 70% say it's inappropriate for Congress to be involved
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/PollVault/story?id=599622&page=1

snip>
That legislative action is distinctly unpopular: Not only do 60 percent oppose it, more — 70 percent — call it inappropriate for Congress to get involved in this way. And by a lopsided 67 percent-19 percent, most think the elected officials trying to keep Schiavo alive are doing so more for political advantage than out of concern for her or for the principles involved.

This ABC News poll also finds that the Schiavo case has prompted an enormous level of personal discussion: Half of Americans say that as a direct result of hearing about this case, they've spoken with friends or family members about what they'd want done if they were in a similar condition. Nearly eight in 10 would not want to be kept alive.
