Is there a Registered Sex Offender living next door to you & your kids?
i personally think that any man convicted of raping a child should be locked away and never released, but then the world would be strange indeed if i ran it.

pot smokers get locked up for years while child rapers are released back into the public to do it again.

pedophelia is not curable like some disease, child molesters cannot be rehabilitated.

27. We have 1 a block away, and another on the next block over. I
don't know who they are... but I do make sure my daughter is safe from them and every other predator.

2. There are 3
between my street and the next street over from me. My children know it and I try to let everyone know in my neighborhood.

For anyone in Florida, here is the link. Check it often, it's always changing.

7. I believe that there are links in every state.
...public awareness & getting past the "I don't want to get involved" attitude will go a long way to stop child abuse and pedophiles.

8. Yep
I make a point of posting the link every so often on the local message boards and it never fails that someone has no idea about the registry. I'll continue doing it and making people around me aware of who is living near us. I won't put up posters anymore though. Did that once and won't again. My family needs me.

3. Genocidal lizards cannot be rehabilitated either.
The only cure is a lobotomy. I suggest Wal-Mart offer them as a free service during eye exams.

19. Not all sex offenders are pedophiles.
Many, including my neighbor (a man in his 60s) were convicted of sodomy in GA. In other words, he was arrested for having gay sex. A hetero would not end up on the list. This is very unfair. Each sex offender has the charges listed on the GA website. Unfortunately, those most likely to be hurt by one of the pedophiles are the least likely to have access to the internet or even know that the list exists.

23. There are Major problems with the registry....
Teenage consensual sex, for one; your example ...but, due to the nature of actual sexual offenders I am not opposed to the list (and actually support it). Work toward having the asinine laws, such as your example in Georgia, overturned (I know, east for me to say!)

15. "registering" sex offenders is a huge scam
... we the citizens are having to do the job of the jails. if they are still dangerous to the point that they have to "register" and be tracked, what are they doing out in the community? why do we the citizens have to expend any energy at all keeping an eye on and protecting ourselves from known habitual criminals? just the fact of a "registry" and monitoring of these monsters is PROOF THAT THEY ARE NOT "CURED" OR "REHABILITATED" AND NEED TO BE KEPT LOCKED UP. this latest heartbreaking and totally unnecessary death in Florida is just one more example of the absolute stupidity and failure of the "sex offender registry" system. all it is is a modern-day version of branding someone with a scarlet letter--in this case, a well-deserved scarlet letter, but it's just NOT WORKING.

PEDOPHILIA SHOULD WARRANT AN AUTOMATIC LIFE SENTENCE WITH NO POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE, EVER -- OR A DEATH SENTENCE.

16. There was one living 200 yards away from me...
In a little shack by the railroad track, but the shack is vacant now, and the registry has not been updated.

He was living right across the tracks from 4 kids. I doubt their parents knew about their "neighbour"...

21. None on my street - but some nearby
No where I would let my son venture, however, because he's not old enough to even cross the street without me.

Oh - and playing in our back yard is OK - he takes the dogs with him. They wouldn't let a bird come back there, much less a human being.

22. A little perspective
I can't provide a link, but I have heard of a special prison for child sex offenders that was based around rehabilitation rather than punishment. Although I think it only lasted around a year or two, it managed to get the reoffending rate for its patrons down to less than 50%, as opposed to the usual rate of around 90% for child sex offenders.

Then there was one particularly highly publicised case of reoffending, and the moral majority crowd had the place closed down - thereby effectively creating however many pedophiles corresponded to that 40% gap, in the long term.

This is obviously an issue that gets a gut reaction out of people, but to all those saying "they are incurable", I think you'll find progressive doctors and psychologists who will disagree. And to all those saying "lock 'em up for life" and dusting their hands as if that would be the end of the problem, it might not be wise to be creating powderkegs of pedophiles all gathered in one place, particularly given the volatile situation in your country at the moment.

24. There's One IN My Apartment Building
When I posted about my dismay in a)finding that out and b)not being notified by the landlord or manager that they were renting to a registered sexual offender with a felony conviction, I got my shit jumped for it. I know there are unregistered rapists all over, but shit, finding out there is a know rapist (or to be precise, lewd and lascivious conduct with a child under 14) living a few doors down doesn't make me super happy. Especially since few sexual offenders limit themselves to just one age range for victims.

25. There are several within a 1.5-mile radius... but the Kansas database
only lists offenders who committed their offenses after mid-1994. There is one listed on the same street where we once considered buying a house... glad we didn't do it.
