I just got my first piece of hatemail through my CO support website!
Edited on Fri Mar-18-05 01:51 PM by IrateCitizen
I helped co-found a conscientious objector support network recently called www.peace-out.com with a couple of other recent Army CO's. Today, I received my first piece of hate mail from a certain rickroughneck@******, telling me that all of us are cowards and he spits on all of us, and that he's a former Marine and Vietnam veteran.

On behalf of all of us at www.peace-out.com, I'd like to send a special thank you to Rick, because he's our first hate mail and now that we've gotten that out of the way, we know that we've truly arrived!

:toast: To Rickroughneck!

EDITED TO REMOVE EMAIL ADDRESS OF "OFFENDER"...

Thanks, Rick. Just so you know -- you're our first hate mail!

We never felt as if we had really arrived until we got a negative message. Now we can feel as if we are getting somewhere. Thanks for giving us that vote of confidence!

And what on earth would make you think that I wouldn't pass your message on to others? Do you really think that sending anonymous messages over the internet, without even having the courage to sign your own name, is something that is going to make us somehow feel intimidated or less about ourselves? Please. At least all of us are up front about who we are, and don't have to resort to sending cowardly anonymous messages to others without a signature.

Chris Harrison

They spew their hatred but are afraid to sign their names. Real brave, ain't they??? I've gotten a few in my time, all of them with fake names and/or email addresses. Cowards, the lot of 'em.

14. If he were really such a hardcore Marine...
... he wouldn't refer to himself as an "ex-Marine". Ask any of the former Marines on this board, and they'll tell you.

Only people who want to distance themselves from their experiences in the Corps refer to themselves as an "ex-Marine". Most of them abide by the slogan, "once a Marine, always a Marine".

Oh, and one more thing, Rick. If you really WERE a Marine, there's no way that you'd refer to yourself as an ex-Marine. As they say in the Corps, "Once a Marine, always a Marine!" The only people I've ever seen who have referred to themselves as "ex-Marines" are those who are trying to distance themselves from that part of their lives.

You might want to check out the following website -- www.freerepublic.com. Plenty of other armchair warriors and poseurs there you would probably identify with.

Chris Harrison

35. For a pacifist, you sure know how to pick a fight
Reminds me of the kids who come to my yard to see my dogs, and my beagle charges at them barking furiously. So they curse and spit and throw things at him. That really proves that they are friendly people doesn't it? Yet, if they could find a way to get to know him, they would find that he's really quite a nice dog.
"People are people so why should it be, that you and I should get along so awfully ...now you're punching and you're kicking and you're shouting at me. I'm relying on your sense of decency, so far it hasn't surfaced but I'm sure it exists. It just takes a while to travel from your head to your fist."
PS - the world is full of hate, pass it on.

36. Yeah, whatever...
I have no patience for armchair warriors. If someone is going to confront me or call me names, the least they can do is sign their name. If someone wants to inquire honestly about my organization, even from the standpoint of stating disagreement, then I will respond civilly.

Kind of like I just did to a senior NCO from the 82nd Airborne Division who just contacted me, wanting to know if I was really associated with that site. He didn't express support for our views, but just had a couple of generic questions, to which I responded as well as I could.

What on earth would make you expect that there would be any finding of common ground with people who send you notes only to call you a coward and say how they would "spit on you" without even having the courage to sign their name to it?

44. yes, common ground can be hard to find
even among people who are supposed to be on the same side.
Yet I had this exchange with a conservative.

"1st. Congratulations….we receive literally thousands of email each week, and yours was by far the most ignorant one I’ve seen. Do yourself a favor and actually read the book next time - before you go and embarrass yourself again, moron.

2nd. Congratulations, you’ve done it again! You continue to make an amazing fool of yourself and yet hysterically, you don’t even realize it. We find it very interesting that you would call someone a “sellout” with a “boring story” who “ceased to care about anyone else” and then you whine about being called a moron.

Thank you sincerely from the bottom of our hearts, for giving us a good and hearty laugh on this Monday morning.

3rd. Excellent points and advise (name redacted). And yes, I didn’t get enough sleep. But I bet Carolina, not the Pats.

I appreciate the email and thanks for writing."

We have to learn to live together because nobody is going anywhere. I am not just trying to brag, but to show that it is possible (although he probably just responded that way so I would go away). If you are looking for reasons to hate, you can just about always find one (or several dozen if you are trying to hate me). Returning hate for hate only increases the hate. Ignoring it or responding with reconciliation may not work, and may even backfire in some cases, but the effort is important. Otherwise, One Tin Soldier Rides Away - "Go ahead and hate your neighbour ... justify it in the end."

17. I served 24 years so you could create your support network, not
so "ex-marines" could make an effort to prevent you from doing so. The constitution allows for conscientious objection. bush lied about reasons to go to war against Iraq. I guess "ex-marines" get a hardon reading about "ragheads" being murdered for oil. Best of luck with your network and long live the constitution. This retired Navy Chief Petty Officer is still under oath to support and defend the constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. Be forwarned "ex-marines." There are thousands and thousands of us in your midst. Just trip the trigger and see what happens.

22. You are very welcome.
I really get wrapped around the axle when people start messing with other people's constitutional liberties. I truly believe conservatives know not of what they are doing. If they are successful in their efforts to unravel the constitution they will not suffer any less than non conservatives. If it weren't for the constitution they would not be free to hate from the pulpit. They just don't get it. And an "ex-marine" should be well aware of that fact.

43. Rick is confused.
If the actual goal is to be a C.O. counselor, then it would be an error to react in a negative way to the hate mail from Rick. It is wrong to mock him or to be disrespectful. To be a CO advocate, your skin must become seven spans thick, so that you do not react to an insult or a threat.

Rick's message should be viewed as that of a diseased mind. You would not poke fun of a person who suffered physical disabilities; please do not react this way to someone who has suffered the worst form of mental disability -- hatred.

Instead, use Rick's message in a positive way: it is sad proof that the vessel which contains bitterness becomes contaminated. It is a good reason for people to oppose military service. But it is not justification for returning anger in response to his anger.
