A funny thing is that in the Autobiography of Malcolm X, Minister Malcolm quotes King on that, and many on the left would attribute the quote from the book to Malcolm, because it sounded harsh. Sometimes the truth is harsh: Martin told the truth.

but we should never forget that he was despised by many for telling the truth about the history of the problems that were still causing misery for millions of Americans in the 1960s. He was considered an "America basher" for saying the exact same things that the OP said. He was portrayed as an enemy of the state. If Martin were alive today, Dick Cheney would insist on his being held in a Cuban jail where he would not be allowed to author any letters.

While I think it's pissing in the wind to discuss who the world would be better off without be it Republicans, Christian or overzealous Michael Jackson fans, I do think it is VERY worthwhile to discuss not ONLY the genocide that preceded us but the over 400 treaties we have broken with native Americans while we bomb the mother loving fuck out of innocent Iraqi's for a couple of broken UN resolutions.

Check on the part about being founded on slavery.

You do know that our first couple hundred years consisted on trying to eradicate and eliminate the native americans from anywhere the WHITE men desired to settle - not co-exist, not share - but ELIMINTATE. Do "reservations" ring a bell.

Check on the part about genocide.

So whoever said that, was 2 for 2.

Or what is YOUR fantasy about our history?

And the repukes want to hold that the "original intent" of the constitution - those above mentioned ideals - should be the supreme law of the land today.

I and everyone other than repukes believe that we are a living breathing growing entity - that we can and should do better than what our original start got us.

Equality and Justice for ALL.

That is what we should be striving for.

And the fact that these criminals want to take us BACK - away from the previous high ground we once held - I will take pleasure in bashing what WE'VE BECOME until I see a return to liberal progressive values.

TJ and the other foudners did what they could during their time. They were people of great vision and they started a country where we had the right to try and fight for change. They recognized individual rights. They paved the way for the advances that followed. That's what makes America great. We got the machinery for change.

He was conflicted and as all of us are wont to do, he caved to the political pressures of his time. He owned slaves, he fathered children with at least one of his slaves. Jefferson was a very complex, intelligent person. What is your point?

BTW, not to bash america, but have you read any of the first person accounts of Columbus' voyage to the "new world" which outline the slavery and genocide? Would you agree that Columbus and other so-called conquerors of the new world set the stage for oppression and slavery? Nothing new in the history of humankind, of course, but we need not sugar-coat it.

As responsible citizenry it is our duty to see our country warts and all. The ideals expressed in our constitution and declaration of independence are worthy aspirations... but it is important to remember that even those hallowed documents called for rights for the privileged and educated--not for the average man, let alone woman, indigenous person, african slave, or child.

Maybe what we americans do, when we are at our best, is squarely face ourselves in the mirror and bash away. It seems to me that too many today own a mirror just like the one in Snow White..."you my queen are the most beautiful in all the world".

Kind of gives one a savior complex :) to believe such shit!

Bashing oversimplifies. Bashing often doesn't have the truth on it's side.

Bashing is often loud and not terribly coherent.

I will not practice "percussive maintenance" on my country. One poster said that it should be okay to bash what is yours. Sounds rather like what I did to my toys as a child. Problem is, you tend to break them that way.

I'd rather the stuffins didn't come out of my country.
