Why are people posting Michael Jackson crap on GD?
What's wrong with you people? Are you unaware that "news stories" like that are a big part of the reason why we're in such a mess in this country in the first place? That we actually accept such irrelevant celeb-gossip crap as "News"?

Is this a deliberate attempt to disrupt, or are you folks still under the corporate media's spell?

There *IS* a Lounge to post fluff in, you know.

1. Amen to that!
But they do have the right to post in GD. No one is forcing anyone else to read it.

2. Why is it irrelevant?
He's one of the 5 most famous people in the world and he is being accused of molesting a child. It might be more appropriate in the lounge, I suppose, but it IS a relevant news story.

BTW, most people on the DU are under the corporate media's spell - I got rid of cable on November 3, 2004. I haven't watched one speck of the mainstream news, but when I log on here, everyone seems to be watching it!

(and all the while complaining about the media!)

Unreal!

4. How is a famous person's travails relevant to anyone?
It's pure entertainment value. The results of this trial will have no impact on anyone's lives but Michael's, the kid(s), and their lawyers.

If Michael was accused of giving a bribe to a politician, or dumping toxic waste into the stream on his ranch, that would be somewhat relevant. This trial circus is not.

3. well
like it or not, people have always followed the trials of the rich and famous. I suggest liberal use of the Hide Thread button.

10. I disagree. A decision that will be made later today is extremely relevant
i.e. does a celebrity have the power to hold a court hostage and fail to appear at the designated time without suffering the consequences any other citizen who is a defendent in a criminal trial would suffer under identical circumstances.

21. If ANY of the Jacko threads on GD were about that, I wouldn't object.
But they're mostly about "Is he guilty???!!! (pant pant)"

Who freaking cares?

18. I take from the tone of your message that you assume he's guilty.
I'm glad that you have such a firm faith in the word of DA Sneddon, who is a Christian Reconstructionist, and the tabloid media's assessments of the evidence unfettered by standards of positive proof. Just saying.

8. TV corporate Media is using celebrity stories so you won't find
OUT THE TRUTH.... :
Nothing that they touch is going well.....Iraq Lots of Americans dead.....
Bush's conviction by the International Criminal Tribunal this week....GUILTY of War Crimes.... sentenced to life in prison....(They don't have the death penalty since they are civilized)...Blair was also tried and found Guilty, same sentence, since they don't have a news black out in England as they do here, his supporters have left him and his leadership is in question. We are living in a completely controlled news propaganda nation not unlike Russia...If reporters try to tell us the truth they get shot at...like the Italian woman....There have been 71 reporters killed by the Americans in Iraq....The embedded reporters report what the government tells them...and nothing more....So Michael Jackson is all they have left to get people from actually thinking....People love him or hate him...So by emotionally involving sheeple in his trial they have a good chance to placate the sheeple......and get them off the REAL NEWS.....

13. When I was in high school - '60s - there was a gang "hit man"
that hired out for $10 and a bus ticket. He always carried an umbrella and was known as "Umbrella Man". He tried to whack Jimmy Meeker in the park one day with a knife with no handle, and cut his own hand worse than what he gave Jimmy, passed out, and was arrested. I've always wondered whatever became of him. He may be out, now, and part of a security entourage somewhere, with a famous person. Umbrella in one hand . . . defensive weapon in the other . . .

14. Because we don't feel like dignifying it with LBN postings.
I think you've put your finger on the important point, though. The MJ trial furor is a symptom of what's generally wrong with the American media--hence, General Discussion.

16. There Is a Word For the Fact That This Thread Was Posted
Condemning the people who wrote threads about Michael Jackson. There are about as many threads bitching about the Michael Jackson threads as there are Michael Jackson threads themselves.

What's the word I'm looking for? Oh yeah, it's this one.
