Jesus said "the poor will be with us always..." so hell with 'em!
Freepie post from another board, explains how the Shiite Christians think:

"Jesus said the poor will be with us always. They have always been. Mankind in their lofty and noble goals to wipe out the poor and equalize the money have failed over and over because there are those who just do not want to work and those who love to work."

1. I've heard this one before too
Goes hand in hand with "Hasn't the new deal been a total failure? After all we still have poor people" for dumb arguments.

3. That's right up there with
"medicine is a failure; people still die."

6. that's taken completely out of context
it was from shortly before jesus was killed, when a woman gave him a gift (i forget what exactly it was) and his disciples got mad at her for giving it to him and not the poor. jesus said it was okay, because he would not be with them much longer, but the poor will always be.

it may be the only time in the bible it ever says anything negative towards the poor, and that's the only one the freepers remember. grrr.

7. It was a woman who was going to wash his feet
with oil, iirc.

12. It's not negative
Jesus said he was going to die but the poor folks would still be alive.

8. Of course, that's not what Jesus meant.
Edited on Tue Mar-08-05 04:19 PM by Lone_Wolf_Moderate
He was simply pointing out to the Disciples that there is lawyas time to feed the poor, but at that particular time (when the woman was washing His feet), was the time to worship Him. Of course, Judas, who was the one that complained about breaking the alabaster box, really didn't care about the poor, he just wanted the box and oil for himself.

Besides, Matthew 24 makes it clear that we are to care for the poor.

9. Jesus said a lot of things
but accepting a small gift does not make it okay to kill, rob and exploit the impoverished people of the world.

BTW, here's something else that Jesus said:

10. Jesus also said things like:
"Sooner will a camel will go through the eye of a needle than a rich man will enter the kingdom of heaven."

"If you want to attain eternal salvation sell everything you have, give the money to the poor and follow me."

True Christians are rare, very rare indeed.

11. Jesus also said it was easier for a camel to
pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven.
