Bill Maher has Ward Churchill on.....nobody watching?
"answer the question: why are the people of Dean Witter guilty?"

etc....I can't type too well

he says he would have fought in WWII, but things like saturation bombing were wrong

interesting exchange....Maher is being fairly evenhanded...no faux outrage

Maher: why are these people not innocent

Churchill's answer elicits some applause

Michael F comes out, defends Churchill, has brother killed working for Kantor (sp?) Fitzgerald

2. Watching
I can't agree with him. It's not the same, these people are guilty only as most Americans are for ignorance, for accepting the government line. They were not willfully evil.

3. I'll see the rerun
Much as I like Maher, I hope his treatment of Churchill is fairer than the gibberish about him that Maher produced the other week.

And is Maher still going on about trying to get right wingers in his audience? Why, for Christ's sake? Looking around the media, it's fairly clear that his is one of the very few shows not produced for right wingers; and it is a welcome sight to see the likes of Andrew Sullivan and Tucker Carlson being harried by the sound of applause for their opponents.

Now that you've got a measure of freedom, Bill, use it.

7. that was weird...he was supposedly on to defend him, then demanded
an apology!

what was up with that.

let's face it...the reason they did the WTC is that it is, indeed, the symbol for all the muslims hate about Western society; the center of economic power that drives the world economy, which, they think, is aligned against the Muslim world in myriad ways

22. Wow, I think it's much simpler. It's all about
McDonalds, KFC, whatever the hell is allowed to be over there. Emphasize that with the clothing and freedom in the west. So you're correct; it's our sorry ass. FREE lifestyle and ways compared to their religious ways that are drawing the lines. I'm 49 years old, but don't take away my liberties or ability to despise some American ways. That ability is what I'm afraid of losing.

25. I think it's even simpler than that
How about the towers were two 110-story buildings at the edge of an island which made them unbeliveably vulnerable to planes hitting them. If they wanted to go after a "financial center", both the NY STock Exchange and the American Stock Exchange were within blocks. They hit the towers because it was "easy" and the people inside them were nothing but innocents.

12. Great Job by Maher
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 11:53 PM by minkyboodle
I have been down on him recently (last week's show specifically) but that was unique and great TV. About Churchill, I have never been the biggest fan. He always struck me as sensationalistic and reckless and thats way before this recent stuff broke out (I agree with his basic principles behind chickens coming home to roost) Its very useful to contrast Stannard's work on the Native American field with Churchill. Anyway, Foley is rocking like I thought he would. More than any other guest he represents my personal views. GO CANADA!!! :)

BTW Reno is doing very very well so far

16. I saw the show, but was disappointed. The panel was dominated
by Maher and the blonde. Janet Reno looked good, but she is being to show signs. Foley was good, when the blonde allowed him to speak. Did anyone other than me think Maher was uncomfortable except when he was talking about his hobby horse items. He seem a bit forced at some points.

Churchill is either not the great communicator, or he was being obstinate. I read the piece and I understand what he was saying about enablers not being innocent. But then I think that it is only when a baby smells like a new born, is their true innocence. But Eichmann was a bad analogy, imho.

18. I agree about the panel
Dave is by nature passive although I thought he did quite well when he chose to get his opinion in. Reno was too passive although she did quite well at times. The Family values lady and Maher did dominate although most of the discussion centered around topics that I am more sympathetic to Maher's libertarian views on (religion etc) Thank god they didn't talk about taxes and social security :)

point, Maher shushed the others to let her speak.

19. Churchill was not a great communicator,
Edited on Sat Mar-05-05 12:43 AM by babylonsister
that's why Maher was compelled to stand up for him. Perhaps because Churchill was on TV? Otherwise, why couldn't he defend himself? And yes, he could have accomplished a lot more without that Eichmann stigma.

Edited for a bit of clarity.

24. I saw Churchill on CSPAN in a college town hall type setting...
He is a really great communicator when he has a lot of time to communicate his complicated points. I thought tonight he couldn't put his thoughts together cause he was so rushed by Bill due to time constraints. If you get a chance to see him on CSPAN, be sure to watch. He is very dynamic, even though many of us won't agree with him on some of his points.

28. Forget Maher, listen to Ward Churchill on his own ground
This must be the link to the event you refer to, a lecture at CU that ran on American Perspectives 2/12/2005. WOW. Start at 47:00 or you'll get a dose of Delay and need a pill.

Russell Means gave the intro. Hadn't seen him for a while. FYI, I saw someone wearing a "Free Leonard Peltier" t-shirt at the demonstration in Mainz. Tried to catch up with her but couldn't; it's international, it's all linked.

http://www.cspan.org/Search/basic.asp?ResultStart=1&ResultCount=10&BasicQueryText=ward+churchill

Agree not at all, whole, or in part; it's part of the complex picture and I'm glad someone is researching it, writing it, saying it.
