I haven't really been paying much attention to overall violence trends, but there has been a noticable increase in murders here.

No idea why, just curious if this is happening elsewhere.

1. Not here.
Our overall crime rate continues to trend downward, and we haven't had a murder in quite some time. They're rarities here, actually.

2. This is the guntoting wild west
and I live in the inner city.

I heard gunfire twice in the past year. The previous year not at all, and most other years once. I'm not counting New Year's Even and July 4.

I guess that's an increase.

3. In the Sacramento area.
In the greater Sacramento area, there have been some gruesome murders. One was an execution by two gangbangers who shot and killed a motorist in mid day traffic. There have been a bunch of murders, pretty damn scary but I'm sure jr will save us and ahnold too!

I'd sure like to see those two have to live in the areas %99 of the rest of us live in.

8. Oh, OK.
It just struck me oddly, because the timing of your post came immediately after another poster and I had posted that things were pretty good, so I wasn't entirely sure who you meant.

:P

5. A gay student a UNC was beat up last week
in Chapel Hill. Six or seven college-age men beat him up and broke some bones.

Chapel Hill is (used to be?) a very, very liberal university town. So this is new to us . . . a hate crime right on the main street.

7. Overall, violence is down
I suspect the same is true in Iowa as well. There may be some anomolous short-term statistical spikes in any given location, however, overtime trends will flatten.

Too often the hyper-representation of crime on TV news makes it appear as if crime is getting worse. In reality, its just getting more TV coverage.

10. That's what I always wonder
Is there really more of XYZ happening or is the local news just telling me more about XYZ?

In this instance, I think it has to be that there are simply more murders in the area (since murders ALWAYS make the news here).

9. More violent here in the PNW. It does take data a while to catch up..
.. the data will no doubt show that crime is up, violent crime actually. Overall crime is going down becuase the population is aging, and the bigger boom of people are still in grade school. The crimes seem much more senseless lately.. and I think it's like the 70's recession, when it got really ugly.

12. As always when a Repug is in office we have had an increase
in robberies and gang violence (what I call survival/money crimes) caused by lack of jobs...

14. Murders down in New York, too.
I think it's the lowest in about 30 years in 2004.
