More Than One Way to Kill a Cat (euthanasia)
though i don't personally believe in euthanasia, i thought this was a great article is respects to pounds that are taking actions to become 'no kill' facilities but are taking necessary steps to become so.

"Manny Mondaca pulls a small black cat out of its cage in a room where the walls are painted a comforting pastel blue. He lays the animal gently on a steel table covered by a soft quilt and scratches it behind its left ear. He strokes it a few times. He takes care to treat the cat especially kindly, because he is about to kill it. With Smooth Jazz 101.9 playing in the background, Mondaca’s colleague, Leticia Arroyo, picks up a hypodermic needle filled with a blue poison called “Fatal Plus.” It lulls an animal to sleep before it dies. The cat registers the needle’s soft entry into its belly with just a twitch of an ear."

4. I would GLADLY designate a portion of my taxes, or voluntarily...
...pay additional taxes to insure humane treatment of stray animals instead of funding inhumane treatment of human beings. In fact, after I hit send I'm going to call my local animal shelter and ask where to send them a check to support their efforts.

Who pays for it? I do, gladly.

8. So money is more important than humane treatment?
You disgust me.

2. Is there a point? We euthenize animals all the time. This has nothing
to do with the human issue.

5. the point is...
is that homeless animals are being euthanized in a positive manner, versus violent or unfeeling.

12. What? When were they ever euthanized in a torturerous
manner? Even taking the dog outside and shooting it in "Where the Red Fern Grows" is humane. Euthanasia is never about torturing anyone or hurting them when you kill them (animal or human). That is call murder or torture and you go to jail for that. Euthanasia is always about killing someone when you do not know their will. That is the issue. With animals whose wills we ignore their whole lives... we accept euthanasia. With human beings - when we do not know their will - it is an issue.

So I do not understand why you posted this? You make no point. Throughout history if you put down and animal and did it in a cruel way you were either a sadist or a feline. If you were human that makes you a sadist.

3. People have to spay and neuter their pets
I work with a group that saves cats and dogs from the pound. It's expensive and hard to place them. Then I hear people talking about buying a purebreed or letting their dog have a litter and it makes me mad. There are so many beautiful, sweet, loving pets languishing in pounds and not enough good homes to go around.

The most special people in our group are the ones who go to the pounds and pick out the most adoptable ones. It's heartbreaking work.

6. i can't even imagine having to do that
i think more people should be educated on the positive aspects of animal adoption. two of my kitties are from the humane society that were being maltreated, and it is one of the best feelings in the world knowing that you are giving your cat/pet a good home.
this is a really good way to strike out against pet abuse since it's extremely hard to provide proof that owners are being abusive to animals...

9. My vet...
....takes in strays. She has older cats and dogs and has great success in adopting them out, which is great. That's where I got one of my current kitties. Someone had found her and she was pregnant and Dr. Ludwig took her in. They kept her until she'd had her litter and spayed her and she and I bonded instantly.

Oh, the kittens and puppies are sweet and such fun, but it just tears my heart out when I go to PetSmart and see the older cats waiting for new homes. God bless them for all the work they do to place those animals.

10. That's where we place, in Petsmart like stores
I was being a little melodramatic - it's not "really hard" to place them, but a lot of people put a lot of work into making it happen.

Jes' spay yer pets, please :silly:

11. I adopted my Amy at Petsmart. I think they do a great service by letting
rescue organizations use their stores to find loving homes for unwanted cats and dogs.

7. Humans find it so easy to kill.
Discovering a sustainable human lifestyle that values all life would be Heaven.
