All-Time List Of Worst "Human" Garbage
Who is on your list of "Worst 'Human' Garbage" and why?

Here's my incomplete list.

Gee-Dubya - do you really NEED an explanation?!?

Cheney - see above

Don Rumsfeld - Over 1,500 dead US Soldiers, and tens of thousands of dead innocent Iraqi civilians.

John Ashcroft - Patriot Act

Poppy - He created the monster at the top of the list, need I say more?

Reagan - Supply-side economics, ketchup as a vegetable, etc, etc.

Nixon - Watergate

Sirhan Sirhan - if not for him, Nixon would never have BEEN Prez!!

Moammar Khadafi - Pan-Am 103, other terrorist attacks

Osama Bin Laden - 9/11

Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman - WTC bombing on 2/26/1993

Hitler - The Holocaust

Mussolini - Fascist bastard, makes me ashamed to have Italian heritage!

Sen. Joe McCarthy - McCarthyism

Joe Stalin - the gulags of the former Soviet Union

Kim Jong Il - He's just a freak, that simple.

Torquemada - The Inquisition

Pol Pot - Obvious reasons

Pontius Pilate - Again, obvious

And I know there's plenty more, so let's keep the list rolling. Add yours to the "All-time List of Worst Human Garbage"

2. Pontius Pilate?
Weren't the Pharisees responsible for turning Jesus over to the Roman authorities? My recollection is that were it not for the Pharisees, Jesus would not have been turned over to Pontius Pilate. I think you picked on the wrong one there.

As for the others, good list.

12. He was a lackey
It's like putting a Nazi who was "following orders" ahead of Hitler. The Pharisees were the real evil, like Hitler. The Pharisees were misusing religion for political reasons just as the religious right is doing it now.

21. I agree, the Pharisees were worse.
The parts of the New Testament that deal with Pontius Pilate are interesting. To me, he comes across as a disinterested bureaucrat, unfortunately not very much different from the majority of politicians in our world.

Judging from his record in Texas, if George Bush were the Roman representative, he undoubtedly would have been all the more eager to crucify the subversive.

26. Um, so what?
He didn't know who Jesus was, beyond being a trouble-maker. Pilate no doubt condemned a lot of people to death. You may as well include "The Jews" in the OP's list, as they bear about as much responsibility for Jesus' death as Pilate does.

And here's what REALLY gets me about Christians being all upset that somebody killed Christ: get a clue people, Christ *had* to die for there to be any Christianity. Without the death and alleged rising from the dead, what would you all be? Probably worshipping Mithra or something (which might be a good thing, come to think of it).

31. I think you miss some important points
Christ had to die for there to be Christianity. He could not rise from the dead, if he had not been killed. However, Jews did not kill Jesus. Most of his followers were Jews. In fact, it was because he had such a following among Jews that the Pharisees felt threatened.

As for the death of Jesus, it is still something to be remembered and mourned, even though there would be no Christianity without his death. Some people misused religion and power to cause the death of a good man. Isn't this a good reason to study and remember Jesus' death?

56. I think you misunderstood me.
One of my points was that "The Jews" (lumping them all together the way Christians have for centuries) were *not* responsible for Jesus' death. As you say, his followers were Jewish. This is why I said that they bear the same responsibility as Pilate: i.e., none to speak of. If I wasn't clear about that, I apologize.

I have no problem with mourning the death of Jesus; I would do that as I would any other great person, and plus I feel he might have done more good and had an ultimately more positive impact if he had died as old man in his bed surrounded by grandchildren. My point is that many, many Christians over the centuries have focused on Christ's death as a tragedy to blame someone for, and have ignored the implications of his sacrifice. I'm not a Christian, but I think this is very wrong of Christians to do. Christ's life and death are equally important from a spiritual standpoint, and it is entirely inappropriate for Christians to be angry and bitter about his death, and yet it has been used an an excuse for the worst kinds of misdeeds imaginable.

34. Pilate actually did not want to crucify Jesus
He brought Jesus and Barrabas before the Jews hoping that the Jews would choose to release Jesus, because as Pilate told them, "I find no fault in this man," whereas Barrabas was a known thief.

They chose to release Barrabas, much to Pilates disappointment, but still he honored their decision.

Pilate did not "condemn" Jesus to crucifixion, Jesus' own people did.

19. yeah, he was a bureaucrat who was bowing to pressure
from the local bigwigs. He was a brutal man, but that was his job.

All the popes who inspired crusades should be there, along with the idiot who inspired the crusade against cats, opening the door to the Black Death. The one who inspired the Childrens' Crusade was the worst of all.

How about Torquemada? He was a real sweetie, too.

Oh, and the author of Malleus Maleficarum, which ushered in a centuries long holocaust against women.

47. Pilate merely caved in to pressure from the religious right...
something that we are seeing a lot of these days.

Right after the 2004 election results came in, while still in shock, I asked myself how people could possibly choose a known criminal. It turns out the religious right has a history of 'inciting the people' to choose the bad guy. The classic passage is in Matthew 27. Note the wording of verse 20:

But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.

...and those Pharisees like James Dobson and Jerry Falwell are still up to the same mischief; they persuaded the multitudes of evangelical Christians to choose the criminal in the 2004 election.

***

Matthew 27:15-22
15Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.

16And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.

17Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?

18For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

19When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.

20But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.

21The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.

22Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.

That term sucks.

It's the age-old reflex of dehumanizing your enemies so you don't have to treat them as humans. Take that out far enough and you get boxcars headed to Auschwitz, and lynch mobs stringing up "darkies."

There are a lot of people I don't think much of, but bottom line is they're not garbage.

Peace.
