I've said that, y'know... I'm a nice guy, registered Independent, free thinker and an aritst who, in the past 3 years, has begun getting "hate-mail" for the first time in my career because of the Truth I'm putting in my songs. Still, I've decided to keep writing the kind of songs I've been writing... without a thought as to "how they will play" or how they will afftect my livelihood. I'm a New Yorker who watched the towers fall that horrible day, just as I've since watched our commercial airways, news media and Democracy slip away, and I can't be quiet anymore.

Well, with this latest song, both the hate-mail AND the support mail has increased through my website. (But, the hate-mail is getting rough again.)

4. Adversity is a sign of success.

Try to remember that the "hate mail" you're getting is a LOT more about the sender than it is about you. Your lyrics are simply touching buttons that are either extremely hot or cold.

What matters is that, you are trying to do the right thing,...you are trying to expose the truth which makes some folks very uncomfortable, even hateful.

Believe it or not... I'm just beginning to acquire the thick-skin I'm gonna need if my work is gonna take this kinda turn... and it IS!

Spread the word all around Minnesota. Get songs like this out there. Keep speaking up. We can't be silent anymore. Make a noise so loud that people of Reason can't ignore it anymore! Make them turn off FOX, and "Fear Factor" and "The Apprentice" long enough to actually pay attention and THINK!

11. Start posting the hate mail on your website.

That way, you can point out how stupid, illiterate and hypocritical they are. Maybe it's more effort than you think it's worth, but it has been done successfully before, and it would probably pull even more traffic to your site, albeit from the people sending the hate mail as much as the people just wanting to see what the idiots wrote to you. Anyway, I'll pass on Jesusland.

I'll talk to my webmaster about that idea. It actually makes sense. I'm not all that savvy about internet stuff. (I write songs.) Other people handle computer world. But, on it's face, yours sounds like a good idea to me. I'll pass it on. Maybe they can set up a separate page just for hatemail.

Y'know, it's weird, though. First thing that hit me when I saw that photo from 5 years ago...

...when I did that concert at Merkin Concert Hall in New York, September 11th was still in the future. Nobody had any idea what a nightmare a George W. Bush presidency would become, and I was still largely unaware of the extent of this right-wing cancer. I also thought Bill Moyers, who I so respect, was exaggerating the danger of the corporate takeover of American media.

(whew!)

No wonder my songwriting has changed direction.

In this age of corporately controlled airways and cable, it ain't like the 60s and early 70s... when protest music and songs of substance could make it into the mainstream.

If you're reading this, I'm counting on YOU to pass this song on, and songs like it.
