My little weak-assed essay tribute to Hunter S. Thompson
The Proverbial ‘Live Boy’
By William Rivers Pitt
t r u t h o u t | Perspective

Monday 22 February 2005

"The only way I can lose this election is if I'm caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy."

- Edwin W. Edwards

In the same month the planet gets to know the ‘journalist’ James/Jeff Guckert/Gannon, Hunter S. Thompson decides to make The Big Bit-Spit and eject from the planet. This could be sacrilege, and I hope his family will forgive me, but there is something wretchedly fitting in the confluence.

Hunter was a drunk and a drug-sucker. He would go to cover an event and slather himself with LSD. He went to the ‘72 GOP convention as a wild-eyed liberal and elbowed his way into the activist bullpen, grabbing a sign reading ‘Garbage Men Demand Equal Pay’ before charging the floor with the Nixon-shouters to howl “Four More Years!” at John Chancellor. He wanted to write about motorcycle gangs, so he went out and joined the worst of them, and got his ass stomped in. And wrote about it.

Hunter Thompson is the reason I write politics. Period. He was the most honest man in the business. Everyone else had and has an angle, a reputation, or a source to protect. Hunter stripped it down to the raw throbbing nerve and let it fly. How is this for prose:

How many more of these goddam elections are we going to have to write off as lame but 'regrettably necessary' holding actions? And how many more of these stinking double-downer sideshows will we have to go through before we can get ourselves straight enough to put together some kind of national election that will give me at the at least 20 million people I tend to agree with a chance to vote for something, instead of always being faced with that old familiar choice between the lesser of two evils? I understand, along with a lot of other people, that the big thing, this year, is Beating Nixon. But that was also the big thing, as I recall, twelve years ago in 1960 - and as far as I can tell, we've gone from bad to worse to rotten since then, and the outlook is for more of the same."

Or this:

"It is a nervous thing to consider: Not just four more years of Nixon, but Nixon's last four years in politics - completely unshackled, for the first time in his life, from any need to worry about who might or might not vote for him the next time around. If he wins in November, he will finally be free to do whatever he wants...or maybe 'wants' is too strong a word for right now. It conjures up images of Papa Doc, Batista, Somoza; jails full of bewildered 'political prisoners' and the constant cold-sweat fear of jackboots suddenly kicking your door off its hinges at four A.M."

Or this:

"The main problem in any democracy is that crowd-pleasers are generally brainless swine who can go out on a stage & whup their supporters into an orgiastic frenzy - then go back to the office & sell every one of the poor bastards down the tube for a nickel apiece. Probably the rarest form of life in American politics is the man who can turn on a crowd & still keep his head straight - assuming it was straight in the first place."

That’s the stuff. Rip it down, Bubba, and let the fur fly. For the record, the aforementioned is from ‘Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 1972,’ possibly the most purely excellent book on politics to be found anywhere.

Amusing, then, that Hunter decides to cash his check in the same week we learn about James or Jeff Gannon or Guckert or whatever. What would Thompson have made of this feeble wretch? Of a man who reports on the White House with a fake name? Who was so clearly the go-to guy for McClellan or Bush when the questions got too hot? Who copied and pasted his ‘news reports’ from boilerplate GOP press releases? Who somehow got within 20 feet of the President of the United States using a false name while peddling his own ass as a male prostitute for $200 an hour?

Hunter once wrote in ‘The Great Shark Hunt’ about walking in on two Secret Service agents sharing a joint back and forth in a hotel room. Maybe that’s how Gannon/Guckert/Whoever got within pistol range of the leader of the free world. No other explanation seems to satisfy.

It comes down to this. The Bush crew has been caught in bed with the proverbial ‘live boy.’ Someone in that White House either eased Gannon/Guckert/Whoever through the ‘hard pass’ application process, which requires a thorough background check, or else smoothed the way for him to get day pass after day pass after day pass. Some complain that Gannon/Guckert/Whoever is being victimized for his political views. This misses the point. Someone let a working, advertising whore into the White House, and then was stupid enough to let him walk around alive and free after he blew his own cover. That’s the point.

The latest news on the wires is that Gannon/Guckert/Whoever is planning on suing all the people who have ‘smeared’ him. This is me waving my arms wildly in your direction, James/Jeff. You are a disgrace. You are an embarrassment to everyone who endeavors to write about the news of the day. You shame the institution of journalism, in and of itself a feat. You are a prostitute, literally. I call you whore. Sue me. Put me on the witness stand. I dare you. I double-dog dare you. You are no victim, and you know it. I call your bluff. Sue me. Please.

My hero died tonight. He was a flawed man, a maniac, in so many ways the antithesis of what a journalist is supposed to be. Worst of all, he told the truth. There is now one less warrior on this planet filled with Guckert clones, drones who get fed shit and regurgitate it wholesale for the masses because that is what we are trained to eat.

Rest in peace, Hunter. Thank you for everything. We’re going to deal with this Gannon/Guckert/Whoever person, and then move down the line and deal with the rest of the whores. You died on the eve of the birth of a new journalism, populist in nature, beholden to the truth and thanking the Google gods every step of the way. I wish you had stuck around to see it, but I’ll tell you all about it when we meet at that clearing at the end of the path. Until then…

The Hunter S Thompson Interview
BY ADAM BULGER
CULTURE | 3.9.2004

http://www.freezerbox.com/archive/article.asp?id=287

This interview took place in early March 2003, shortly after the publication of Kingdom of Fear.

excerpt:
Q.Right, but I mean, there were those assholes who flew the plane into the World Trade Center.

A.Who were they indeed? Now, do you believe that, that a bunch of Arabs jumped up from some kind of a campfire and fucking mountains over there and snuck into this country and hijacked those planes and did that by themselves?

Q.Well what are you proposing? I mean I think they were funded years ago by the CIA and it was a blowback, but, I don't think there was any direct... Are you saying there might be some other American agency or some international agency that directly supported them in that?

A.Uhh, this is tricky territory, but yeah, that's what I'm getting at.

Q.Really.

A.I can't sit here and jerk up documents like Joe McCarthy, there's no proof of that. But I'm sure there is. And the idea that we're getting the whole story, uh, through the uh, the media, or from the president, is absurd on it's face because you never do, for one thing. And there's so many unanswered questions and loose ends and uh, lets see, well, lies! Yeah, about what happened. That they, in the run-up to that day, the years, I wrote a column about it right after it happened.

Hunter elected an honorable way to deny the masters control of his future. Grieve not for one who in the final moment denied victory to his oppressors. This was Hunter's ultimate "finger" to the ruling elite.

14. You're a whole different person...When you're scared
Warren Zevon and Hunter S. Thompson

You met her in a Turkish town
But you didn't want to bring her here
You didn't want her hanging around
In the Kingdom of Fear
So you left her there

You're a whole different person
You're a whole different person
You're a whole different person
When you're scared

The eagle screams on Friday
The Colts are doomed this year
The fat's finally in the fire
In the Kingdom of Fear
Dangerous creeps are everywhere

You're a whole different person...
When you're scared

We have ways to make you talk
You won't like at all
If you can't run, walk
If you can't walk crawl
But don't look down
It's a long, long fall
And you loved her in a Turkish town
But you didn't want to bring her here
You didn't want her hanging around
In the Kingdom of Fear
So you let left her there

You're a whole different person...
You're a whole different person when you're scared

It is a fitting tribute.

He was a master at turning a phrase. He could say in a few sentences what others might need an entire chapter to articulate. He was a vertible marksman when he turned his typewriter on his prey.

I work as a columnist, too -- not one covering politics as much as I'd like (not directly, anyway, though tangentially, more and more...)

Anyway, yes, it was Thompson who first taught me, as a teenager, that the idea of "objective" journalism was an utter, absurd myth, and that has shaped my reading eyes -- and what my fingers write -- ever since...

32. One of my 'muses' died this week as well.
She hated guns. She bought one, read the instructions, put in 6 rounds, took a bunch of sleeping pills as she climbed into the mountains... and shot her head off.

She was a brilliant chef. She won top awards in 2000. http://www.acfchefs.org/events/scoy.html She won most of the National competitions she entered. She blew her brains out. Her son is now my responsibility and he is 18 and quite disturbed.

She was also a brilliant person, but in a different way. When my Nana died she created a feast the WH would be envious of. I wish I was not here to attend her funeral. I wish I could wish this all away.

Sometimes we know what they are capable of - but do not wish to dwell on the results of those abilities.

...somehow mentioning Gannon in the same breath with the good Doctor strikes me as a backhanded insult.

But doing it in HIS EULOGY is unnecessarily topical, dating, and sad to say, wholly unworthy of the subject altogether.

And I know that wasn't the intent.

Hunter will be mourned long after Gannon/Guckert has been forgotten.

I love your work, and this one leaves me to wonder...

Do you have editors over at Truthout?

Personally, I wouldn't have let you post this without a fight, but that's just me.

edit: On the plus side, the non-Gannon stuff is great, as usual.

51. Perhaps.
I'm a fan of both Pitt and Thompson.

If you think I could have saved my critical analysis for another time, it's just as easy to say he could have saved mentioning Gannon/Guckert for another time.

And nobody reads my stuff because I haven't put together a website, written any interesting books, or put sufficient time and energy into the cause, other than posting at DU, showing up at the odd protest, and making monthly contributions to organizations I think can make a difference.

I can acknowledge that.

So any and everyone, and especially Will, feel free to take my unsolicited advice with a grain of salt.

It wasn't meant as a flame, and I'm glad it wasn't taken as such.

56. It definitely seemed to fit for me.
It's the emotion you displayed in talking about Hunter's truth vs. Gannon's (and the White House's) lies that really spoke to me.

I am in tears. I just spoke to my son. He's very upset. You see, he also thought about going into journalism because of Hunter S. Thompson. He had a partial academic scholarship to a very good private college in Pittsburgh. He got so ill with depression that we had to bring him home. He has even been hospitalized. I have never known a scarier feeling than the day he told me that he wanted to end it all.

He's doing well now, living on his own in the city. He has not been able to return to school yet. He's concentrating on his musical career right now.

I told him to use his creative talents and write a song about Hunter.
So, you see, what you did by writing that essay on Hunter inspired my advice to my son.

Truly cathartic. Thank you.

58. but it's a natural reaction to rage against the living in some way.....
and i would think hunter thompson would have enjoyed the rant himself, more so than all the hero-worship.
i'm hoping hunter's passing reminds a lot of journalists remember his inspiration, that they are awakened by this, and get to work.

59. True.
You are absolutely right.

His leaving should inspire everyone to get on with it already.

46. IMHO, it's an excellent essay.
It shows that you are honoring your god by utilizing your own creative talents. There can be no better way.

I have to soothe my 21 year old son. He also worshipped Hunter. Like Hunter, my son also suffers from depression, so this is very frightening to him (and me).

Thank you for letting your emotion show in this piece. It makes it very moving and special and cathartic.

61. Not weak-assed, Will. NOTHING could capture Hunter Thomas in an essay
He was bigger and bolder and crazier than that.

I'm glad that you have imbibed so much of the best of him and are carrying on with the business of telling the needed truths in clear, damning language.

Here's to the future of truth-telling!
