Maria, Maria, Maria. Get a grip, girlfriend
Shriver hits campaign trail for husband

- - - - - - - - - - - -
By Lynn Elber

Sept. 10, 2003 | LOS ANGELES (AP) --

Maria Shriver has gone on the campaign trail to make the case that husband Arnold Schwarzenegger, Hollywood's most efficient killing machine, is really a sweet and sensitive guy.

‘‘He's one of the most gracious, supportive, open-minded men I have ever met," the TV journalist said at an appearance in Santa Monica last week. ‘‘I've known him since I was 21 years old, and I know I would not be where I am today in my career, as a woman, without his support."

Her new visibility, which aides said had been planned weeks ago to coincide with the start of her children's school year, comes as Schwarzenegger tries to deal with stagnant support among women and the fallout from some old interviews in which he came off looking like a sexist jerk.

A poll released this week shows Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, the leading Democrat in the Oct. 7 recall race, gaining among women. Bustamante has support from 35 percent of women, while Schwarzenegger's support remained at 22 percent.

2. It seems to me like it would be really strange for Maria to be
talking to the people who would be voters for the terminator.

Like..they are the ones who listen to limbaugh and are taught to hate the Kennedys at the sound of their name! :-(

6. But that's just it
I don't think Arnold *is* a neocon. I think he's an old-fashioned Rockafeller Republican. While I don't think he's Gerry Brown socially, he doesn't fit with the Ralph Reed set of his own party either.

If he wins -- and I cringe as I write that -- I think the neocons will be disappointed with him politically.

Nevermind that the overall point is no one who wins will have a definite mandate to do anything seems to be lost.

8. I don't think arnold is "a neo-con", either. But that doesn't exclude..
limbaugh listeners. I'm sure he has lots of listeners who aren't neocons.

4. Sorry Maria, while i do respect you as a woman and a mother and a
member of the Kennedy family, I will not support your husband. As a supposed "good Democrat" how can you possible support this travesty of a recall. You have got to know that your husband does not have a clue as to how to govern the state of California.

Give it up!!

5. Does the fact that Maria stands by her man have less to do with his
character than her religion which prohibits divorce?

I suspect an element of the suffering wife/martyr in her demeanor. Either that or she's into S&M.

Odd couple.

9. Part of the plan
Okay, so she's the typical wife of a pathological narcissist. Only in her case the illusion of Mr. Wonderful has lasted much longer than usual. This may sound a little out there, but I believe Arnold has always had a plan and Maria is part of it. Or maybe she's a narcissist, too.

10. On Democracy Now
a week or so ago, Amy Goodman had on a woman who (if memory serves me correctly6) is a rape survivor, and does advocacy work for rape survivors. She was being interviewed some time earlier by Maria Shriver, who said that her (Maria's) husband would leave her if she were raped, because then she'd be damaged goods.

That's not a husband who is supportive of women.

As to her religion forbidding divorce, there's as many divorces among the many Kennedy relatives as in the rest of the population, I'd say, just on casual remebrance of which of them have been divorced. Of course some have gone the "annulment" route, but that's just a fancy name for getting a divorce sanctioned by the Catholic Church.

12. what about the sexual harassment
of his female colleagues on movie sets? And the remark, quoted in a similar article in the NY Times this week, about how much he enjoyed shoving a woman's head in a toilet bowl in Terminator 3- - a fun thing you don't get to do in real life!!

13. so what gives her any credibility anyway?
why do people care what she says? she's married to a rich jerk movie star... she parlayed her family name into a career as a mini-celeb... why does her opinion carry any weight at all in the first place?
