Lynne Cheney: I NEVER wrote a lesbian-themed novel
Edited on Mon Feb-14-05 09:40 PM by Bluebear

Lynne Cheney can only be regarded as a chronic liar who is not honest with the Press or the public. NOW she claims that she never wrote a lesbian novel.

During an interview on Fresh Air (NPR) last week she got extremely snippy with the hostess over her supposedly not supporting the so-called "Protection of Marriage" amendment to the Constitution regarding gay marriage.

Interview link:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4492285

Terry Gross/NPR: (President Bush said in his State of the Union address) 'that this amendment would be for the good of families, children and society, I couldn’t help but wonder if parents of gays and lesbians would see it as being good for their families, and I–'

Lynne Cheney: 'Terry, I don’t support the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, and I’ll leave it right there!!'

Terry Gross: 'Is it because of the issue of gay marriage itself or is it because it should just be a states’ issue and not a –---'

Lynne Cheney: (robotic) 'Terry, I don’t support the idea of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, and I will leave it right there!!!'

Terry Gross: 'Just one more question about the position that you’re in–----'

Lynne Cheney: (exasperated) 'Terry, I really think that we came here to discuss history more than current events, and I’ve made my position clear.'

Terry Gross: 'Is it difficult to be in a position where you’re differing from the president?'

Lynne Cheney, testily: 'Well, not too difficult, since I’ve done it how many times now in the last 10 minutes? Perhaps six? I’ve made my position clear.'

Terry Gross: "You wrote a historical novel in 1981 called "Sisters" ...one of the other characters in the movie was a lesbian---"

Lynne Cheney: "It was NOT a movie and there was NOT a lesbian in the novel!" .....

Terry Gross: "So there's not a lesbian character in it? Because everyone who has read it says there is."

Lynne Cheney: "No.".....

Terry Gross: "So you're saying there is NOT a lesbian character in it."

Lynne Cheney: "Nope!"

“Let us go away together, away from the anger and imperatives of men. We shall find ourselves a secluded bower where they dare not venture. There will be only the two of us, and we shall linger through long afternoons of sweet retirement. In the evenings I shall read to you while you work your cross-stitch in the firelight. And then we shall go to bed, our bed, my dearest girl.”

much like her scary, lying, Darth Vader-esque husband. Methinks she doth protest too much.

Lynn should have done a little research on Terry before she agreed to that interview!

I hope Terry read some excerpts!

They don't know why they cozy up to hunky reporters or say "you've got a face for radio" to others.

They don't know why they stuff socks in their flight suits

They don't notice when their family members are gay

They don't notice when characters in the novels they write are gay

12. Refusal to answer questions
I hate how they refuse to answer the questions of the press, especially when they are relevant and make sense (she is disagreeing with the president, her husband is the vice president, can I spell it out for you?)

I think the reason for this is to show her support for her own daughter, but she will not show that she supports any thing gay in any other way, even if it means blatantly lying. It's annoying to see that she doesn't show her own opinons. What a nasty little liar. x(

Media blast/mass e-mail the more meaningful excerpts from the book, use this link:

http://www.whitehouse.org/administration/sisters.asp

I would recommend sending to all of your local media, with a copy of the above interview, asking why Lynne Cheney is lying about this?

Also a good idea to send to your local right-wing radio stations. Ask them is they support this type of trashy novel???

Editorial Reviews

Product Description:
From Lynne Cheney, the wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, comes a riveting tale of women in the American frontier.

The novel of a strong and beautiful woman who broke all the rules of the American frontier...

Sophie Dymond had overcome nineteenth-century prejudices to succeed as publisher of a hugely popular women's magazine. But when she left New York to revisit her native Wyoming, where her sister had died mysteriously, she left her prestige and power far behind. Waiting for Sophie was a world where women were treated either as decorative figurines or as abject sexual vassals...where wives were led to despise the marriage act and prostitutes pandered to husbands' hungers...where the relationship between women and men became a kind of guerilla warfare in which women were forced to band together for the strength they needed and at times for the love they wanted. In her effort to grasp the meaning of her sister's life and death, Sophie discovers the secret that tainted her life and begins to understand the experience of the vast majority of silent, trapped women.

And the reviews...

Enjoyed it except for the dirty parts., August 4, 2004
Reviewer: Gen. JC Christian, patriot (Tremonton, UT United States) -

Deputy Leader's wife did a bang up job on this book, but I wonder why it had all that sex in it. Conservatives don't do those things she wrote about--it's sinful. And the part about the women having sex with each other was just pure fantasy. Everyone knows women can't do that. They don't have "little soldiers."

**************************************************************************

Leaves you panting for more!, February 20, 2003
Reviewer: A reader

This story of a Washington wife who leaves her powerful husband to join a womyn's commune is charged with the kind of eroticism you just don't expect from the Second Lady of the United States of America. I was amazed at how graphically Ms. Cheney details the commune's daily "massage classes" and their predictable free-for-all aftermaths, while at the same time delivering a devastating critique of phallocentric discourse in modern culture. I can't wait for the sequel, in which the Sisters declare war against the male-dominated multinational corporation that is threatening to foreclose on their commune. Four Stars!

30. She also denied her daughter came out
as a lesbian.

Dick Cheney's wife, Lynn, tried furiously to make the issue go away during a July 30 appearance on ABC's "This Week." When Cokie Roberts attempted to ask about the "daughter who has now declared she is openly gay," Cheney didn't even let her finish the question.

"Mary has never declared such a thing," Lynn Cheney snapped. "I have two wonderful daughters. I love them very much. They are bright. They are hard working. They are decent. And I simply am not going to talk about their personal lives. And I'm surprised, Cokie, that even you would want to bring it up."

But Mary Cheney has been open about being lesbian for years. She didn't hesitate to use that fact in her former job as Coors Brewing Company's liaison to the gay community. Gay groups had long boycotted the company because the Coors family bankrolled conservative, anti-gay causes.

36. The audacity of Totalitarian Rulers is amazing
One of the differences that they have from the Rulers of Free People.

Rulers of Free People fear being caught in a lie, even when they tell them.

Which is one thing Nixon and Clinton shared, this very Free American idea that getting caught publicly in a lie is bad and is something to be ashamed of (whch leads to cover-ups).

But of course, they were Free Men ruling a Free Country.

NOTHING like Imperial Amerika where the answer to getting caught in a lie is too loudly repeat the lie, denounce those who dare point out the Emperor has no clothes, and then tell six more lies, thus erasing the first one.

If this sounds similar to Nazis, Soviets, Comrade Putin's Russia, Ferd Marcos Phillipines, or any one of a hundred others, it us no coincidence.

No coincidence at all.

41. in a way, she's right -- it's actually a novel about power and selling out
Check out this in-depth analysis of the book, by DU's own Plaid Adder.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/plaidder/04/37.html

"At the end of the day, folks, Lynne Cheney is just not about sex; she's all about the money and the power. Specifically, this novel about how the smart thing for a woman to do is to get her hands on as much money and power as she can have without exposing herself to the dangers that threaten all the women who challenge the capitalist/patriarchal system."

42. OK, as much as I hate to give Lynne credit for anything,
I have to say that according to Lynne's undeniably warped view of the world, it may be that she actually believes that this novel doesn't have a 'lesbian' story line. My review of *Sisters* is up here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/plaidder/04/37.html

She gets around the L-word by having the protagonist decide that the two women who are in love with each other (one of whom wrote the letter quoted in the original post above) never actually had sex. It was just one of those 'passionate friendships,' you see, where women fall in love with each other, but they don't actually "leap lustfully into bed," as she puts it. So if your definition of "lesbian" is "woman who has had actual sex with another woman," and if you believe Sophie (the protagonist's) conclusion that her sister never actually Did It with her beloved schoolmarm, then no, there is no lesbian story line in *Sisters.*

However, this is all pretty much semantics. *Sisters* absolutely does have a plot line involving two women who are in love with each other and it's central to the novel. If she wants to play word games, fine, but that ain't gonna change what she wrote.

C ya,

THe Plaid Adder
