Maya Keyes stranded...Alan 'defending the family' Keyes...
apparently thinks the moral high ground includes leaving his 19 yr. old daughter on her own in Chicago in the middle of winter to find a way back to the east coast...

http://www.advocate.com/new_news.asp?ID=15123&sd=02/12/...

Are you not able to go home?
Yeah, I can't go home. Although my girlfriend pointed out that if I just refuse to leave my apartment for a few more days, there's not a lot they can do about it. It's not like it was my apartment that my dad was paying for, as so many people have suggested. It was my dad's Illinois residence, so even after I leave it, it'll still be there and be paid for--it'll just have no one living in it except for a couple days a month when he's back here. So even though they said I had to get out after today, if I didn't until Friday--when I'm heading back to D.C. for the Equality Maryland thing--I'm not sure there's a whole lot they could do. I hope, anyway. I don't mind the streets, but it's wet tonight. My girlfriend is in New Jersey. I could go, but it'd take me a while to hitch out there from Chicago. I really only know one person in Chicago, and he isn't answering his phone, so I don't know. I guess at least until tomorrow night (which will, hopefully, be drier) I'll do what my girlfriend suggests and just totally blatantly ignore my order to get out . We'll see what happens. Hopefully, nothing will.

1. Once again, the "family values" crowd shows their true colors ...
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 10:59 PM by BattyDem

They always tell us that family values are the most important part of the American way of life ... unless your kid is gay. :eyes:

2. I want to know if he thinks his daughter is
a 'selfish hedonist'. That's what he called Cheney's daughter.

3. Yes, Keyes said if his daughter was gay, he'd say the same thing to her.
He hasn't publically condemed her yet, but it'll probably happen soon...

4. Hooray for family values,
And why does this story sound so familiar? Maybe Alan Keyes and Randall Terry (http://www.advocate.com/new_news.asp?ID=12057&sd=04/15/04) should start a promise-keeping group whose members give testimonial of the gloriousness of turning their backs on their altogether too human flesh and blood. It could be a real money maker for them if they convince Jeff Gannon to do their P.R. once he's done creating those military/uniform M4M web sites!

5. Someone needs to get the word to this young adult to ..
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 11:19 PM by Maat
contact the Point Foundation. Would that help? They help college kids who have been abandoned by their parents mid-college because they were GLBT.

She's in my prayers! Surely, he wouldn't put his own child out on the street?

Of course, this would help for the long-term, not the short-term:

6. I think she has already graduated
Be careful promoting black or gay rights, I was just called a "progressive whack job" for supporting black and gay rights on another thread.

There seems to be some anger around here regarding blacks and gays.

8. That's odd!
One of the key characteristics of being progressive is being pro-human-rights/pro-equality. I've been on this Board for over a year now, and have never read an anti-gay post; perhaps I've not seen the threads in question.

This is a PROGRESSIVE board, after all.

I've never seen an anti-African-American post either. I must not be hitting those locations!

Of course, if I saw some such drivel, I'd be out of there in a second anyway.

9. This is such a prevalent situation that there is an organization to
help kids like her?

Words fail me.

14. Tragically, yes.
There are many touching stories about how the Point Foundation has helped really academically-talented kids, who, while attending college, were abandoned financially by their parents - when they came out.

15. Absolutely
Many, many teenagers living on the street are there because they were kicked out because they came out to their parents. (Of the rest, most of them left because of abuse -- sexual, physical, or emotional. It's a travesty in this country that children think street life will be safer than their home life, and in some cases, be correct in that assumption.)

7. Here's a question for Repukes.
Why do they think that gay parents are so horrifically scary and such a bad idea, since there are so many gay sons and daughters of Repukes? What, in their tiny little minds, did THEY do wrong to create a gay offspring? Why isn't this issue ever asked of them? What could gay parents possibly do that's worse than what they themselves did to create a gay child?

Here they condemn their children, yet won't take 'responsibility' for the child they created.

Please know that I think being gay is:

1. A personal issue, nobody's fucking business.
2. The way you are.
3. Just fine.

And if Keyes' daughter had been two years younger, there would have been a social worker at his door charging him with child abandonment. Oh, for the days of the 21 year old majority, so Keyes and his wife could be charged.

11. I thought Alan was moving to Illinois.
Guess he still lives in Maryland. How is he trying to protect his "family" by disbanding it? I feel sorry for this young lady. All her father is trying to protects is the assurance that the funds he's syphoned off the public through is unending campaign for office of the day aren't cut off. He might have to work then.

12. Any way to get word to her if someone can give her a place to crash?
Her father may not care but I bet there are a lot of DUers that do.

13. Well this will certainly save a few marriages.
Especially in the Bible Belt where Divorce is more prominent than anywhere else in America.
