Psychedelic drug found in Valentine candy
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/V/VALENTINE_MUSHROOMS?SITE=TXSAE&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

Authorities doubt Cupid had any part in the 9 pounds of heart-shaped candies discovered during a traffic stop.

The candies, found Monday by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, tested positive for psilocybin, a psychedelic drug extracted from a mushroom of the same name.

The estimated value of the faux Valentine's Day chocolate was more than $408,000, DPS officials said in a news release.

The troopers found the candy in a plastic bag after stopping a San Francisco man's 2005 Toyota Corolla on Interstate 40 about three miles west of Amarillo

3. What possible valid grounds could they have had
based on a traffic stop, for sending candy to a laboratory to see if it contains drugs?

4. I Doubt The Candy Was Worth $408,000
Police often inflate the street value of drugs they confiscate.

Police confiscated 25 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of $250,000.

It's overblown bullshit.

Do you people have any idea how many mushrooms it takes to make $408,000?

Now, if it was LSD instead of psilocybin, and the "Carrier Weight" law was still in effect, they might be close not in monetary value but in sentencing guidelines.

For those who don't know, the "Carrier Weight" law made it so that sentencing for LSD trafficking was based on the weight of the material carrying the LSD, not the weight of the LSD itself or the number of dosages posessed. What this equated to was that someone with 50 doses of LSD on sugar cubes would do several times as much jail time as someone caught with 3 or 400 doses on blotter paper. The law had nothing to do with the actual amount of the drug posessed, but with the volume of the carrier mechanism.

7. Actually ...
Edited on Thu Feb-10-05 06:27 AM by Red State Blues
They just say 1000/plant for MJ. Some plants are worth several times that, the other 98% aren't worth nearly that much.

The "carrier weight" law could even be more cruel. A kid with 10 sugar cubes could get more time (life in some cases) than someone with enough to dose Canada, but in pure form in a vial.

Oh, yeah, 408K for shrooms...Bullshit!

9. I was going based on the report about someone I knew that got busted
Edited on Thu Feb-10-05 06:35 AM by ET Awful
in the 80's with a little crop up by Humboldt. He had a tiny garden with 25 nice plants (probably worth no more than a few hundred each when he got busted), they reported it as over $100,000 value in the news :).

edit: I know on the LSD, I just wasn't sure how many DU posters were familiar with all it's various forms, that's why I used the sugar cube/blotter comparison since those are the two most common in folkloric stories about acid :).
