Contaminated Money?
Exclusive: Contaminated Money

Jan 28, 2005 11:00 pm US/Eastern
PHILADELPHIA (KYW) Money that has been contaminated with a virus; it’s a whole new possible direction for bioterrorism. It is a case that the FBI terrorism unit has taken over from state police that involves several cities, including Philadelphia.

As CBS 3’s Tamsen Fadal reports, the unit is trying to determine whether or not a virus was actually placed over money to protect the interest of the Russian mob.

In an exclusive investigation, CBS 3 has obtained documents detailing a bizarre criminal plot involving a virus, suspected drug money, and the Russian mob in Northeast Philadelphia.

Earlier this month, Pennsylvania State Troopers intercepted $250,000 dollars during a routine traffic stop. The alleged drug money, which had been sealed in plastic, was being driven from Columbus, Ohio to Northeast Philadelphia.

According to law enforcement sources, after counting the seized cash, troopers began feeling ill and one trooper was even hospitalized with flu-like symptoms.

Sources tell CBS 3 that tests on the cash counter revealed the presence of a toxin derived from the bacteria staphylococcus.

I read a book once that had contaminated money as the plot. It was fiction of course, but it stayed with me. What better way?

3. So? Big deal. Wash your hands after touching money.
It's one of the most contaminated things we have in our daily lives, even without bioterrorism.

Learn to scratch your nose with the back of your wrist instead of your fingers. Yeah, people will look at you funny, but you'll get used to it. Besides, you'll feel superior when they get the cold and you don't.

The good news is that most bugs die when they dry out. Few bacteria are spore formers, and even viruses tend to degrade after they've been dried and exposed to light for enough hours.

Still, good handwashing is the way to stay healthy. Not touching your face with your fingers is another good way.
