9. I get spammed once when I start
And then after I post a message it just goes crazy!I close I explorer and that stops it.It's very possible it's just me.This is the only site my pop blocker doesn't work.

16. You have a problem on your computer
it's not DU. You need to run Spybot and Ad-Aware. Im sure you have spyware on your machine loading those popups for your surfing pleasure as they say it. Check the Tools at bottom of my post for help.

I have AOL with a pop-up blocker and also Spyware. But everytime I log onto the DU home page, I get a pop-up.

41. if it's the PC, why...
does it happen ONLY with DU. whether I start there or visit 10 other sites before hitting DU.... that's when the pop-up (from fastclick) appears...

not saying it's NOT the PC (and I run spyware very regularly) but WHY is it only triggered by DU?

3. Me thinks it's just you.
Have you tried ad-aware. Are you free with your e-mail addy?

My private e-mail addy goes only to trusted family and friends with instructions to keep it private. 0-3 spams a week.

My general use (trash)e-mail gets 5-7 a day. Where's your email addy been?

I guess pop ups would be the better term.It could be something setup to react when I post a message.

5. What does that have to do with spam?
The browser you use has nothing to do with the amount of spam you receive.

Spyware/adware, yes. Spam, no.

6. The poster is saying he gets spam from this website.
It is possible that he doesn't understand the difference between spam and those nasty little programs that attach to your connection when you sign on without firewalls.

Before I switched to Firefox, every time I signed on to DU, nasty little spy programs attached to my computer and they got my email address and I was getting spam. What the heck is wrong with you, my question is legitimate. Is everyone in attack mode today?

It sounds like a foreign spyware thing that is set to react to DU.

DemocraticUnderground.com is not spamming you.

Skinner should probably post on this, though.

The original poster would do well to take this to the Ask the Administrators forum.

I will alert them now.

12. Before I switched to Firefox, when this type of thing was
happening to me, I notified Skinner. It is not a DU problem, it is just that IE is more vulnerable to spy problems and unsolicited pop ups than Firefox or Netscape.

15. It's terminology.
I suspect the original poster meant spyware, not spam.

That being said, DU's site does *not* install spyware.

Or, the original poster could have meant pop-up ads.

Who knows....

33. It's not because of Internet Explorer
I use Internet Explorer on an eMac at the office with no pop-up blocker and I never have a pop-up from this site. But at home, on AOL with a pop-up blocker, I get a pop-up every time I log on to the home page.

A pop-up blocker is not enough. You need to check for spyware and viruses in your computer.

11. Hmmm
New windows popping up on a website is not called 'spam'. 'Spam' is unsolicited commercial email messages.

I'm not now nor have I ever gotten new popup windows from democraticunderground. My guess you've got a lot of adware or spyware on your system.

46. I run spybot and ad-aware ever couple days
I get one sometimes two pop-ups whenever I log on to DU. Even after I cleared my hard drive and reloaded from store bought CDs. It doesn't matter I can run spybot and ad-aware and then come here I get pop-ups. Then I run them again without going to any other sites and they always find the same hidden programs in my computer.

He is not the only one have this situation. Lately I have been knocked off line when I was posting responses on threads. Things are strange and others have noticed too. I have seen threads about it lately, DoD spies and that sort of thing.

Also what has happen to civility?

24. I believe there's a pop under* on the home page.
I ran into it once on a system that uses IE. I normally use FF and don't see it.

Post this in ATA just to be sure, I could be mistaken.

* A pop under opens behind your active browser window rather than above it.

26. Thought it was just my computer . . .
. . . for the past month or so, every time I log on to www.democraticunderground.com, I get one of those damnable about.blank pop-ups and (usually) a second pop-under of some kind. I've found that if I close the pop-under and THEN the about.blank pop-up, I can (usually, but not always) get into the DU site. HOWEVER, if that about.blank pop-up comes through but the pop-under does NOT show up and I try to close the blasted thing . . . well . . . gr-r-r-rowl . . . my computer freezes up--every time! . . . Alt-Ctrl-Del doesn't even work! There have been times when I've actually had to shut down my computer at the switch because I'm getting no "response" from this contraption! In any case . . . DU is the ONLY website where this is happening when I try to log on. Guess I'm not the ONLY one who doesn't have Firefox!

35. Spyware
Your computer has been infected with spyware. Go to

www.lavasoft.de

and download the personal version of Adaware. Install it and make sure you update it. Most of your problems should go away but the about.blank can be a little more of a pain in the @$$. Also download Spybot at

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

and run this program also. Trust me, I do this for a living.

Happy Surfing

43. I'll check 'em out when I have more time . . . but . . .
. . . meantime--no reflection on you, of course--but . . . the last time I heard, "Trust me, I do this for a living.", it was a land-agent for a major coal operator who was speaking!
.
Thanks, however, for the URLs. I'm bookmarking this thread so I won't forget.

28. I get the pop up too
Every time I goto the front page I get a pop up. I use IE and run ad-aware and spybot frequently to get rid of the crap that results. It is annoying but until now I thought the pop up was DU generating some extra cash. Is this not the case?

Edited on Mon Jan-31-05 12:48 PM by tralfaz
to take your computer to someone who knows the in and outs of computers because it sounds as though you have a nasty strain of spyware. Running a popup blocker may put a bandaid on the problem but the problem still exists and your computer activities are still being followed by companies who are making a living off of your surfing habits.
