I simply cannot believe that no one kicked his ass in NYC. The Sunday morning I came back from an early morning bike ride and found that asshole in front of my apartments protesting the Baptist church across the street...

Well...My U-lock would have made for a pretty impressive mace.

Classes open at gay high school

About 10 protesters, led by stridently anti-gay Kansas minister Fred Phelps, demonstrated across the street from the school and screamed at supporters to repent for their "sodomite behavior." Phelps is best known for picketing the funerals of gay men, including the service for Matthew Shepard, a gay Wyoming college student beaten to death.

incitement. I believe it was his city because I remember chuckling

And nobody is going to step up to his defense. If Fred Phelps gets his ass kicked in NYC or some other progresive city, somehow I don't think local law enforcement authorities will make prosecution of the perpetrator their highest priority.
