Today sucked but........
I really believe in the next few years the public will come to equate the republican party with a failed war and bad economic times. the worm will turn, gop fatigue will set in, things will change. I'm going to keep that in mind everytime i feel like screaming.

3. They did that after the Hoover administration but as time passed,
they forgot. We need to basically change our ethics so that Republican values are not viewed as American values, or this will happen again.

5. Some older people still remember.
My mother was a little girl during the Hoover administration, but she recalls often how hated he was.

We need to get some of our seniors to speak out about this.

8. Hoover was like Jimmy Carter
He was sitting in the chair when the economic shit hit the fan. Hoover was a great humanitarian who led the efforts during the World War I era to stave off starvation in many parts of Europe and he accomplished his tasks through superior oirganization and planning despite opposition from various governments. When the American Great Depression hit, he was as ineffectual as Carter was drihng the 1977-1980 timeframe (remember the great "national malaise"?). After his abotive term of office, Hoover, like Carter, became a national asset and was called upon by presidents of both parties to head commissions where honesty and integrity were required.

10. Say what you will about Hoover.
All three branches of government were controlled by repukes during his term. Corporations had their way on everything.

There was a great deal of labor unrest during the thirties, too, because working people were oppressed. The people were starving here, as well as in Europe. Hoover did nothing to help the situation.

As far as comparing him to Carter, forget it. Carter made sure the Chrysler Corporation was bailed out of trouble with government loans. Our economy would have crashed and burned without this. No repuke administration would have helped them, according to Iaccoca.

Carter allowed the draft protesters who had exiled themselves to come home. He tried to fund research for alternative energy. Reagan shut down those programs.

14. According to my almanac
Hoover was president from Jan 1929 thru Jan 1933. The market crashed in late 1929. Most of the 30s labor unrest took place under FDR.

The Republicans lost control of the House in the 1930 elections. In Jan 1931, Democrat John Nance Garner became Speaker. The Republicans kept control of the Senate till the 1932 elections.

The economy under Carter was the worest since the Great Depression.

6. And WE'RE going to teach that turning worm YOGA!
I believe that political progressive activism - launched and organised through the internet -- is going to speed this process a great deal and make it more inclusive. The corporate media aren't the sole source of news and information any more - there's an alternative. Conyers and Boxer and many others are standing and will continue to fight. The word will spread and people are going to be furious that they were lied to so brazenly and disastrously.

Damn, that turning worm is going to be a PRETZEL, and you know b**'s troubled history with THOSE.

11. They're Playing for Keeps
It is truly a comforting thought to ponder, however, I believe the GOP have no intention on loosening their grip around the neck of corporate news' talking heads anytime soon. The result will be more creative image manufacturing and PR for the Republican party, while Democrats are portrayed in gradual shifts from being members of an irrelevant political party, to being enemies of the "freedom loving" Republican state.

Although the word is thrown around freely here, we are far from reaching an American parallel to the Fascism that Italy experienced under Mussolini, and it's very possible that things will get much worse before a large chunk of Americans realize that they've been made insane with political divisiveness.

It all comes down to this:

The right-wing's ultimate goal is to create a one-party state; one where Republican ideals dominate the fray, and all others are either heard or dismissed at the whim of Republican leadership. They now have the desire and the means to do so, so I expect nothing more than continued attacks on the perceived "liberal bias" in the media. They want the voice of the progressive movement to be silenced.

I believe it is much better to scream, in this situation.

12. Unless the Republicans lose Congress, I don't expect much.
Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 07:32 PM by Stirk
They'll continue to cover Bush's ass. The system has been completely broken by the conservative movement. There are no checks and balances within the government anymore. Even the ulitmate check, elections, may be completely corrupted by the corporate machine.

While I do think the Bush Administration and Republicans in general will implode in terms of public support, their actual hold on the levers of power won't be loosed until the public demands it. A Draft might cause it.
