29. Robert Byrd and others want to give LONG floor speeches.
Just heard this nugget on AAR news update, about 5 mins ago.

Yahooooo! I was wanting to hear from the old lion himself!

I really, really, REALLY believe we are getting to these people. The small chips are turning into boulders breaking off now.

They pulled up kind of a plain-looking vehicle with tinted windows and I slipped on a baseball cap and pulled her down, as did Condi. We looked like a normal couple. (Laughter.)

14. It's about time...
...our party grew a spine and a pair of cajones!

There are glimmers of hope emanating from our party--and it appears that we are not playing human doormat for the Republican fascist thug brigade.

I also saw a DNC ad, which was discussed on CNN. I didn't hear the entire ad, but Bill Schneider droned on and on and on about how harmful this ad was because the Dems were being "uncooperative" with the Republicans.

I hope the Dems are delaying Rice's nomination. She's a failure, a liar and she aided war crimes by licking Bush's boots and keeping the truth silent--for the sole purpose of advancing her career.

Can't wait to hear more...

43. Question for Schneider: And what will the Rethugs do if we cooperate?
Answer: The Rethugs will grind our faces into the dirt whether we cooperate or not. By appeasing them, we save them a little work.

Stand and fight, Democrats!

Rice is not qualified to be Secretary of State. She would be dangerous in that position. She has no skills or expertise as a diplomat.

Edited on Wed Jan-19-05 03:55 PM by TwoSparkles
...then he is really an idiot.

The fascists won't remain in power forever. They know that.

Why on earth would Reps vote to kill the filibuster, knowing full well that they would face the no-filibuster rule too--when they lose power?

I don't care how evil, stupid or misguided a political party is. They all know that power vacillates back and forth.

If the Reps do vote to kill the filibuster rule--then this definitely demonstrates how myopic, self-centered and totally off the rails they all are.

And yes, I do think they're THAT "myopic, self-centered and totally off the rails".

I get all of the high-priced political journals like CQ and Roll Call. They don't seem to think Frist is all that shy about the nuclear option and a lot of people in the Republican party are actively pushing him to do it.

59. I'm so sick of this talk of the nuclear option.
First of all filibuster is useless if they threaten to take it away all the time and cow us into not using it. So call thier bluff.

And if they get rid of it, so be it, when we get the senate we can get stuff acomplished. I think the filibuster has always been more of a problem for Democrats than Republicans.

64. You lack pragmatism.
You call their bluff on the things that you NEED to filibuster.

You don't need to filibuster Condi because he'll just put someone else there instead that will do his bidding. And she's gone in 4 years anyway.

You DO need to filibuster judge appointments. Supreme Court is a lifetime position.

Edited on Wed Jan-19-05 04:23 PM by iconoclastNYC
They won't do it, they aren't going to end Filibuster, they will get nothing accomplished for the next four years, the fallout from the nuclear option would kill Bush's agenda.

So call their bluff. He's going to stack the courts, there isn't much we can do about it. Filibuster isn't going to fix it. He can always put forward someone who is a stealth conservative. Look at who he got to replace Ascroft. Mr. "You can't vote against me, I'm Brown" Gonzales, Mr. Torture Czar. Wow he's going to be so much better for civil rights then the Crisco Kid. Puhleeze.

If and when the Democrats grow a pair of balls and quit playing it safe, we'll be seen as fighting Republican corruption and working for the middle class. And we'll connect with the voters. It's more about style than substance. Standing up to contest the vote in Ohio, and the Rice nomination (a clear case of failing up-wards) is the hopefully the first steps in this process.

Delaying a couple justice appointments isn't going to fix much.

My fingers are crossed we grow a pair, the long term survival of our party depends on it.

88. That's not the Republican way
Of COURSE they'll vote to abolish it, because it HURTS them, them only, and at the exact present time.

Then, when they LOSE the Majority - they'll whine and cry and have a fit until it's back into law.

Don't you see? The Republicans are more equal than others and the sooner the Democrats stop playing their game and start DEMANDING answers AND responsibility instead of appeasing them the better!

And if the DNC doesn't change, if they don't get their heads out f their asses and stop being professional Losers, then it's good that they go, too. One more jellied-spine whine from the DNC and I'm gone. MoveOn better take over, or we here stop preaching to the choir and make our message OUT to EVERYONE, LOUD and CLEAR
or the party is doomed.

And not just our message -- it's time to literally stand up and demand what is our due as citizens of the United States and TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY.

I've written more Senators today with one message:

FOR GOD'S SAKE *DO* SOMETHING!

Hey -- miracles happen

She gets flustered very easily and doesn't seem to think very clearly when faced with any kind of opposition. She is the perfect candidate for Sec. of State. The full Senate is sure to confirm Dr. Rice and, unless one or both of these egomaniacs mounts a filibuster, in time for Dr. Rice to take the oath of office on Thursday, shortly after President Bush is sworn in for a second term.

Everytime a Democrat, or Democrats take even the smallest step in the right direction, we need to be there to both encourage them to do more and to support them against attacks. If we hang them out to dry the party will become even more certain that the left is a political wasteland.

42. So is the positioning for the Dems on the committe who voted "yes"?
Is this their cover? They can say they voted to give her a chance with the whole body... and then vote no when the time comes???

Or did they just screw up efforts to filibuster by providing a number of Dem. yeses?

I'm confused!

58. As I understand the ancient filibuster rule, any Senator may...
Edited on Wed Jan-19-05 04:03 PM by Peace Patriot
...hold the floor (and keep anything else from happening) for however long he/she can keep speaking, on any issue (but it's usually something of vital importance to constituents or the nation), and it takes a 2/3rds majority to shut them up (called "cloture").

So one Senator could do it (to the limit of their voice and physical strength), but if several join together, it could go on for quite some time.

I think the original idea (of the rule) was that any given Senator is a potential president--a V.I.P. who represents a whole lot of people--and therefore has rights and privileges that go beyond merely having one vote in the Senate. They can tie up the whole Senate over a particular matter that concerns them.

The filibuster was used to try to block civil rights legislation in the 1960s, so it got a rather bad reputation among progressives. It may also have been used later on to block the Bork nomination to the Supreme Court (nomination by Reagan?--liberals and women's rights groups opposed it). (... a bit dim on the details).

See the Jimmy Stewart movie, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." Famous filibuster scene. All us oldies will recall that.

63. ...ahem...so it doesn't need agreement of all Democratic Senators...
...it's the right of every Senator. But of course it helps to have support and allies, and co-speakers.

IF this is scheduled for AFTER the inauguration--and is not happening right now--we could ALSO put some pressure on non-participating Dem Senators to give support or join (as well as pressure on C-Span to cover).

There is a West Wing episode where a Senator is fillibustering and running out of steam after many hours of speech. Another Senator is sent to the rescue asking him to yield for a question. He does and the asking Senator begins, this may take a little time, my question is in 14 parts.

You don't go to the well with the rules you'd like to have...

... our representatives are finally getting it. You can tell by their actions. We MUST continue to be persistent in letters/email to news organizations and elected leaders to explain the issues clearly when they are wrong and in showing appreciation when they come through. This will be a long, difficult fight. If they lead, we must support them. Remember John Kerry's words: "Now is a time to stand firm." Never forget.

Maybe they are broadcasting or will broadcast Boxer/Byrd (& others?) filibuster?

------------

audio archive at kpfa.org:

KPFA archives

KPFA preempted their regular programming to cover the hearings, so the Democracy Now! timeslot from 9AM to 10AM is actually the Rice hearings, and so on throughout the day.

KPFA, by the way, has streaming audio archives of all their programming. You can listen to Democracy Now!, every day at work over headphones plugged into your computer, for example. You can browse the archives, and play past shows, and so on. It's a good way to stay informed.

Sliding a little money their way, too, is a good way to support public media. KPFA (Pacifica)
radio at least tries to tell the truth.

I'm still trying to find info on the filibuster (when?) and possible broadcast.

WASHINGTON - Senate Democrats intend to delay Condoleezza Rice's confirmation as secretary of state at least until next week rather than grant her Inauguration Day approval, a spokesman said Wednesday.

"There are a number of Democrats not on the committee that want to have a chance to debate her nomination a couple of hours," said Jim Manley, a spokesman for Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

Democrats plan nine-hour debate on Rice

By John Byrne | RAW STORY Editor

The Democratic Senate leadership expects to reach an agreement with Senate Republicans for a nine-hour debate on the confirmation of Condoleezza Rice next Tuesday, a senior Democratic Senate source told RAW STORY Wednesday evening.

The agreement, which must be reached by unanimous consent, but which is very much expected, will allow Democratic senators not on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to voice their thoughts about Rice on the Senate floor.

Senate Republicans can derail the discussion with a cloture vote of 60 senators–which would have to include some Democrats–but that is not expected, the high-level official said.

Ranking Democratic leader Sen. Harry Reid’s (D-NV) office disclosed Wednesday afternoon that several members planned to debate Rice’s nomination on the Senate floor next week, but Senate offices are mum on this chilly inaugural eve on who exactly will speak. .....

Those eyes. Those cold, calculating eyes.

123. They won't filibuster
but I can guarentee you that damn near every prominent Senate Democrat will be providing a laundry list of how Rice has screwed up, and how the administration has as well.

Those DINO bastards, playing smart political strategy to force the news to be about Rice instead of them. How dare they.

128. Question??????
Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 01:15 AM by EC
does the Senate stay in session during a filibuster, or does the one talking just have to keep talking and others can come and go as they please? Could they force a vote while the Republicans are at their little balls or would they have to sit through it and miss the festivities? I was wondering why Kerry said he'd rather be somewhere else during the inaugural festivities, when I figured they would be done and he could go home...this was planned...kinda deliciously divient...

edit: Must be about 2:00 tomorrow?

129. I Am Glad To See Them Stand Up For A Change!
It's been a long wait, but finally they have the guts to do such! This really is "1984", just hope it's not too late. I can't stand to watch the Republican right wing corporate mainstream news media! Watch what Arnold created in "Running Man", I guess he knew what the future of media would be?

131. Slimy rightwing assholes billing this as "ex-klansman blocks Rice's
nomination." I'm not kidding.

I get sick of Bushbots. What the HELL is WRONG with such people??
