some dont require registration at all.

PK is right. The requirements vary wildly from state to state.

New Hampshire is currently looking at revising a number of provisions in its lobbyist laws, following a sordid episode where the Speaker of the House collected unreported $$$ from lobbyists, which he then used for private purposes (hotels, new tires, and so forth). In the old days, this was known as "bribery".
