India rejects foreign aid for deadly tsunami relief work

Wed Dec 29, 4:28 AM ET

 South Asia - AFP

NEW DELHI (AFP) - India has turned down foreign aid as it has "adequate resources" to provide relief to victims of a deadly tsunami that killed tens of thousands of Asians, a government official said.

India has been flooded with "generous offers of aid" from countries like Russia, the United States, Israel and Japan, said the official who did not want to be named.

"In fact, all friendly nations have offered help but we feel we do have the resources to handle the situation. If at a later stage we feel we need assistance we will not hesitate to ask," said the source on Wednesday.

"Right now we not only have adequate resources but have gone out and mounted a huge relief effort for Sri Lanka and Maldives. We could not have done this if we were facing a problem in Indian relief operations."

6. That's tragic
I think they could use the help, but are distrustful. Also there are (please don't alert or take this in a wrong way) religious reasons why the elite aren't as emotionally upset about the losses in the country. These southern Indians are mostly probably of the lower castes.

Sure there are plenty of enlightened Indians who think otherwise, but the culture still supports the caste system.

8. Bush wasn't offering charity. He was offering a loan.
I get offers like Bush's in the mail all the time, asking if I want to consolidate my debts, cash-out equity, or finance home improvements.

India said No.

9. And you'd be wrong.
India has a growing and vibrant economy. Not only are they prepared to face the devastation and loss on their own shores, they're providing significant aid to Sri Lanka, a nation which they've often been at odds with.

7. Hmm....this is very interesting indeed.
i think in part it has to do with not wanting to be beholden, maybe also becuase the secularists are bakc in power.

And i guess globalization has been a bit of a boon.
