American scuba diver underwater during tsunami
http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/12/29/tsunami.diver/index.html

(CNN) -- An American woman who was scuba diving with her husband in Thailand as one of Sunday's tsunamis roared overhead said she was oblivious to the disaster until after they surfaced, her mother told CNN on Tuesday.

Soon they saw bodies floating past them, Wachs' mother said in an interview from Oakland, California, where she lives.

Interesting line:

Faye Wachs said she was impressed by the efforts of the Thai government and the International Committee for the Red Cross, but "she was appalled at the treatment they got" from the U.S. government, her mother said.

1. Mind-Boggling Story
I read that many divers are among the missing, which makes a lot of sense to me.

That she and the entire group rode the wave out is astonishing. (And I'm a scuba diver myself.)

3. It depends on where the divers were, how far away from shore,
in what depth of water, etc.

2. So for all of you who think that sea animals were affected....in the water
there was hardly a ripple. Not to mention, when you are far out away from shore it will be dificult to notice as well.

4. This isn't my country anymore.
I just happen to live here - and I am waiting for this administration to go home after its harvested all the dollars it can. - I would go to the Red Cross first and avoid the State Dept - Foreign Service types.

8. Oh man, that must have been eerie and terrifing....
...Could they have heard the initial trigger (earthquake or what ever started the tsunami)?
