Faux is probably hoping a Tsunami will hit the US.

18. A devastating tsunami on the eastern seaboard is more likely
than a devastating tsunami on the west coast. Especially the south-mid eastern area - up into New York and Massachusetts areas. One of the volcanoes off the Azores, in the Bermuda/Bimini area, or a major earthquake slip off the Mid-Atlantic trench can overwhelm Florida and push a wave two/three - up to twenty miles inland depending on the topography of the coast.
And there's not as much tsunami alert system infrastructure on the east coast.
The west coast is pretty much cliff face and will do damage in localized areas - true, most of them are pretty well populated, but there will be a chance for more to evacuate in enough time.

A tsunami may not be as common as a major hurricane, but it's far more deadly. And one probably will hit the US within the next twenty years - it may not be a big one, heck, it may just be a "rogue wave" - but it will still do some flooding damage.

19. I would think it is much more likely in the Pacific because
of the faults there. There is a much bigger chance of a large earth quake there.

38. You're correct
the mid-atlantic fault is two plates pulling apart - much less likely to give a large earthquake; whereas the pacific rim is lots of plates that are pushing together or along each other.

The Caribbean does have some nasty faults that could cause some major quakes and waves in the gulf, though.

50. It may be more likely in the Pacific
Edited on Wed Dec-29-04 03:43 PM by haele
but any equivalent tsunami will cause more damage along the Atlantic.

That's what I've been saying

We're used to heavy wave activity - a slow winter Pacific Storm can drive waves up 20 - 30 ft on an annual basis here in SoCal - and we also have a very good tsunami early warning system, and other than gridlock in LA/San Diego basin areas, most people can get out of the way fairly quickly with enough warning. Also, most of the Pacific Coast is cliff face, which will break a tsunami wave before it can go too far inland.

The main dangers in the Pacific will be to the islands - Hawaii, Vancouver Island, Catalina, Guam...and they've got emergency measures in place.

But my point was that it's far more dangerous to have a tsunami - even a small one - on the Atlantic side. If hurricane surge waves can do the flooding damage they do, think of what a wave twice to four times as high can do.

Haele

33. A "rogue wave" hit Daytona Beach in 1992.
This is all that a google search turned up on it:

http://www.2ndlight.com/forum42ndlight/messageview.cfm?catid=4&threadid=6821

THE FLORIDA ROGUE WAVE
Very little has appeared in the scien-tific literature about the huge wave that crashed ashore at Daytona Beach, Florida, on July 3, 1992. Apparently, the scientific community is happy with the landslide explanation, but there may have been a different sort of disturbance.

First, the basic data:

"A wall of water as much as 18 feet high rose out of a calm sea and crashed ashore, smashing hundreds of vehicles parked on the beach and causing 75 minor injuries, officials and witnesses said.
"An undersea landslide apparently caused the 27-mile-long rogue wave late Friday night, a federal seismologist said yesterday."

The seismologist cited, F. Baldwin from the U.S. Geological Survey, estimated that the wave was 18 feet high and 250 feet wide.

Another poster weighs in:

The geologist later recanted his findings.
NWS says it was caused by a backdoor coldfront. Um...OK.
A boater 8 miles off the coast attested to an object plummeting into the ocean that caused a wave that made his 41' sailboat bounce around. He later gave the Navy detailed coordinates of the location of the object so that it could be raised. Supposedly it's in 70 feet of a water off the coast of Daytona Beach.
Others think that because President Bush was in town for the Pepsi 400 the next day, that it was caused by a nuclear sub doing clandestine manuevers off the coast. Some people on this board have already debunked this theory.

So what's the truth? Somebody out there knows, but will we ever know?

21. Me, Washington..on the coast no less..I'm worried.
But then when we bought this place it was the first and initial question...what if a tsunami? I live in county where the tsunami warning and directional signs on the highways are part of the landscape here. This morning, got alert that 5.6 earthquake hit Japan = Pacific Rim, and yeah, I'm worried about the Pacific Rim impact. Not sure what Mother Nature is doing, so not sure she's done having her say yet.

When election night showed the map and I realized the blue states were on both the west and east coast and up there around the Great Lakes, I remember having an odd feeling about the geography...like the coast states could easily be taken out by nature's own twists and turns. Then what would USA be on the political landscape? Anyway, it was just too odd the feeling I had when I saw where most of the blue is in this country.

51. "likely"
It's not really even a matter of it being likely. In both cases, it will happen. The "likely" bit really should be thought of with regards to time. The likelihood of a tsunami on the west coast within my lifetime is pretty high. The likelihood of it happening on the east coast is entirely dependent upon the situation in the canary islands, which isn't really the same as the fault boundaries in the northwest and could easily happen tomorrow or ten thousand years from now. In both cases, however, it's going to happen... sooner or later.

10. I heard some scienific reports on BBC
yesterday that confirmed that there is a large chunk of undersea island in the Atlantic that has broken loose and one jar will send it crashing, triggering a tidal wave that will engulf much of the East Coast...totally covering most of Manhattan. According to the scientist who was speaking...there could be anywhere from two to four hours of possible escape time...but he said, he doubted that that was enough time to evacuate the island.

Those walls of water they said were around 33 feet. A lot of Florida is 3-10 feet above sea level. According to my calculations, it would not be a good thing.

31. Super tsunami
The Canary island of La Palma is the remnants of two volcanoes, one still active. The mountain is basically split down the middle, and another eruption, which could happen at any time, would send about half of it tumbling into the sea, causing a tsunami that will make last Sunday's look like a cannonball dive in the backyard pool. The Eastern US would bear the brunt of it, and would get very wet.

BBC story here

The thing that makes this tragedy so close to home IS THAT IT CAN HAPPEN RIGHT OUT MY FRONT DOOR (and quite possibly will in my lifetime...)

I will admit, though, Faux DOES love a good tragedy (excluding those 100,000 dead Iraqi citizens) with all the incumbent paranoia dished up for the folks in Middle Amerika. It gives them their "raison d'être" as the official arm/opium of repugs in the US.

If that one ever goes, it'll be a 250 foot tsunami that hits the East Coast 12 hours later.

Imagine trying to evacuate all of Manhattan in twelve hours. Most likely you won't even get that much time because politicians will stick their thumbs up their asses for at least two hours before beginning the evacuation!

Millions would die in that mess.

41. East coast could get hit
I saw a program on Discovery Channel a few months back regarding one of the active volcanic inlands in the Azores. According to one of the volcanologists interviewed, when it erupts, there is a better than average chance that it would do so catastrophically, i.e. much like Thera or Krakatau, with a large portion sliding into the sea. That would produce a tsunami that would hit the east coast of the US. The geologist used the word "when" not "if" about the likelihood of such an eruption, too. Comforting when you live not too far from the Chesapeake Bay.

43. Stooooooopid Local News
The local NBC/General Electric/GOP affiliate did a stupid story the other night about how it would be difficult for a Tsunami to hit Chicago, since none have ever been reported on the Great Lakes (no lie...this is what the "reporter" said). Whew...I could almost sleep soundly knowing that and shouldn't that newsbabe be nominated for some award of some sort?

Well, before I could relax in my television-induced cocoon, the "reporter" said that waves could kick up on the Lake and those waves could get high if the lake were hit my a meteor! I was waiting for Klaatu to fly in and freeze time.

It was laughable television, but one that symbolizes the myopic, selfish nature so many in this country hold.
